Jerry Jones: Cowboys are glitz and glamour because Tex Schramm told me to keep it that way

While revealing the Dallas Cowboys’ new partnership with luxury watchmaker Hublot on Monday, Jerry Jones dropped one of his signature one-liners.

The Cowboys owner and general manager said his football franchise is the “glitz and the glamour of the NFL.”

Given a chance to further explain himself Tuesday morning, Jones mentioned how certain NFL teams have an identity. The teams he referenced were the Pittsburgh Steelers and the San Francisco 49ers.

The Cowboys and Steelers are the only teams to play in eight Super Bowls. Pittsburgh has won the most Lombardi Trophies with six while the Cowboys and 49ers each have five.

“Well, when I bought the Cowboys, I actually had thought that I might buy Billy Bob’s over in Fort Worth,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. “The idea of the Dallas Cowboys and the traditional picture of cowboys was the one that was in my mind. Tex Schramm immediately straightened me out. He said, ‘Let Houston be the checkered table cloths and the sawdust floors. The Dallas Cowboys are glitz and glamour. We’re about beautiful office buildings. We’re about the city lights.’ Keep that in mind as you think of the style or how you project what is now affectionately known as the brand. And that’s what I meant.

“A lot of teams have their kind of face or they have their mantra. The Pittsburgh Steelers: steel mill. San Francisco, in my mind, has a certain mantra, but I think the Dallas Cowboys are glitz and glamour.”

It is okay to be an elitist when you are elite.

Schramm's Cowboys were top shelf. Innovators. Revolutionary.

This is a pathetic homer sympathy grab from Jones.

I actually heard this shit this morning on the radio. It was just a way to promote their new sponsor Hublot.

Why is this even a blip on the radar?

A. Jones is always talking out of his ass. This is neither informative nor inflammatory.

B. The Cowboys have always been glitz and glamour. This isn't even an original thought.

I mean, I know the Cowboys have an ultra-retarded fan base but I have never EVER been able to figure out how any decent fan can stand Jerry Jones.

The guy only cares about promoting the product off the field.

It is humorous when people say he only cares about promoting the team and not fielding a winning team. It's laughable. He just does not know how to properly build a team, doesn't mean he does not care. The team would be even easier to promote if it was successful and would gain a shit ton of band wagon fans.

I think he definitely cares.just not enough. his priority in sales and marketing. that's fine for an owner, but not so fine for a GM. and there's the problem.

One goes with the other...he could market even more if his team was successful, unfortunately he does not know how to be a GM.

He has put himself in an impossible situation. He doesn't have the know how and his ego will not let him back away. All there is for the fan is hope that in spite of him the team will win. Join a long line of wait and see folks.

It means he does not know how to build a team, not that he is more concerned with marketing. Anyone with half a brain would realize that the team would be more marketable the more successful they were on the field.

We've now been waiting 20 years since the last Super Bowl win and I see two playoff victories in that time.
Unfortunately that's all I can tell anyone to do. Jones is entrenched and he isn't going anywhere which probably means the team isn't going anywhere. Except for a divine assist it is just wait and see. I am open to other options barring severance with the team.

Oh, I know. That was not intended as a shot at you, just a general commentary. Nothing any of us can do. The waiting part is just getting really old.

Really? He cares so much about fielding a winning team, that he refuses to acknowledge his weaknesses as a GM and personnel person?

Numbers don't lie...and Jerrys care for fielding a winning product has gotten him no SB appearances, 1-2 playoff wins, and a .500 overall record over the last 15-16 seasons.

Yeah..sounds like someone I'd want "fielding" a team for me.

He does not know how to build a team, but that does not mean he does not want to win. Imagine all the new Cowboys fans he could have if he won.

He is making shit tons of money without them, so hard to imagine he cares.

Yeah, I don't buy that. He is a greedy guy who wants more...winning would allow the Cowboys to be an even bigger entity, so he'd want to win...but he does not know how. Simple premise, hard to understand apparently.

Then why doesn't he make the moves to make that happen? Because he doesn't know how is the obvious answer, but the more accurate answer to me is that he doesn't care because he is the second most profitable sports empire in the world.
