MacMahon: Pushed by Williams, Randle playing well

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle, a fifth-round pick who rushed for 164 yards as a rookie last season, opened his conversation with a reporter by declaring that this would be the only time he spoke to the media this season.

Told that could subject him to a weekly fine of $25,000, per NFL rules, Randle quickly reconsidered.

"Now since you said that, I guess I'll talk to y'all," Randle said. "Yeah, that's pretty tough. Nobody wants to play for free, but I'd rather not talk to the media."

Randle would rather just focus on doing his job. Or, for now, on keeping his job.

The Cowboys probably won't have the luxury of keeping four tailbacks due to their need for depth at several defensive positions. DeMarco Murray and Lance Dunbar are roster locks, leaving Randle and Ryan Williams competing for the final spot. (It's also possible that the Cowboys could deal one of the backs competing for the No. 3 job for depth at another position.)

Williams, the former Arizona Cardinals second-round pick who signed with the Cowboys this summer, raised eyebrows with his impressive running late in Saturday's preseason game. But Randle, who the Cowboys gave a third-round grade coming out of Oklahoma State, has performed better on the whole since camp started and has consistently been ahead of Williams on the depth chart.

"Joe Randle right now is really playing outstanding," owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Tuesday on 105.3 FM. "That's not an exaggeration."

Randle, who averaged only 3.0 yards per carry last season, has gained 91 yards on 20 carries in two preseason games, getting a lot of his work against the San Diego Chargers' starters. He looks more decisive and more elusive than he did last season.

That's a result of being better prepared and more comfortable.

"I feel like I'm bigger, I'm stronger, I'm smarter," Randle said. "I'm a year smarter in the playbook. I think that's all things that help me play fast. Now, I'm just working on playing fast every play I'm out there. That comes with practice."

It's not just Randle's running that has impressed the Cowboys' coaches. He has shown significant improvement as a pass blocker and on special teams, too.

"He has matured in a lot of ways," head coach Jason Garrett said. "He has run the ball well. He has protected well. He has showed up on special teams. He has become the player we thought he was coming out of the school -- a well-rounded halfback who can contribute on teams as a third runner."

With a legitimate challenger behind him, Randle's play has spoken volumes this summer.

He has no burst, especially on kickoff returns. I have no idea why he's back there.

I think they're just running somebody out there during PS that they're not too worried if he gets hurt. Once the season starts, that job will be all Dwayne Harris'.

I'm not sure why Newsome isn't given a shot at both PR and KR. He did both pretty effectively in college.

Don't bother with that idea. We are in a solid minority.

Nobody is saying Newsome shouldn't be given a shot at returning kicks during PS. Also, Deuce didn't say Newsome should replace Harris on the roster.

If he is given a shot wouldn't the idea be to unseat Harris?

Not necessarily. Harris is pretty well cemented in his job, and deservedly so. If anything, he'd be used to save wear and tear on Harris. But Randle is already handling that job, and also serves as a backup RB. The roster can only hold so many injury backups. And that's pretty much all Newsome would be. If Harris stays healthy, Newsome would never be active on gameday. (If he was the backup return man)

I feel bad because clearly LT has been breaking down game tape.

Is no one impressed with Ryan? I think he has a chance to unseat Randle.

I am. He has injury concerns though. I would keep giving him as many carries as I could and if he makes it out of TC, then I'd cut Randle.

Do you think Randle is being given a shot to unseat Harris.

Do you think Harris is just some spare part that is easily replaced?
Sometimes it would pay for you to just stick to what is being said rather than let loose with a barriage of hypotheticals that haven't been discussed. Don't quiz me on what I might be thinking just stay with what I have stated.

I quiz you for clarification and there is nothing hypothetical about what I said.

Sorry if its a burden for you to clarify what you stated but going by your statement you believe Harris is in or should be in competition for his return spot or am I not reading that right?

Joseph Randle sucks and he is only around because he was a draft pick.

My initial position was simply that as a receiver I prefer Newsome over Harris. Someone else brought up the special teams aspect. That was not in my stated preference of the two. I don't care who does special teams my position is the same as initially stated, as a receiver I prefer Newsome so, there is no need to compare all the fringe information.. If everyone likes Harris at special teams so be it but my preference of the two as receivers remains the same.

If you ran a real NFL team, you would care about special teams.

And while I like what Newsome did, I have seen enough football where 6th and 7th string WRs working against their DB equivalents in preseason are not going to pan out very often. There are dozens upon dozens of failures for every Victor Cruz type that comes out of nowhere.

For the record, I want to keep Newsome if possible. But I am not cutting Harris, who is our primary PR, KR and even covers kicks well.
