Morris Claiborne (shoulder) out again

Updated: August 14, 2014, 4:16 PM ET

By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. - Dallas Cowboys cornerback Morris Claiborne is expected to miss another preseason game because of injury.

Claiborne, who did not play in the preseason opener because of tendinitis in his right knee, injured his right shoulder during Wednesday's practice with the Oakland Raiders. Coach Jason Garrett said Claiborne would not practice Thursday and probably won't play Saturday against the Baltimore Ravens.

"It's some kind of an AC joint separation, but we got good news about it yesterday, better than the initial reports thought it might be," Garrett said. "We think it's going to be more of a day-to-day, within-the-week type of thing."

Claiborne hasn't come close to living up to expectations since the Cowboys traded their top two picks to move up eight spots in the first round to draft him sixth overall in 2012. He has only two interceptions in two seasons and has struggled in coverage.

He's had his development stunted by several injuries during training camps. He has played in only two preseason games in his career.

"We'd rather have him out there," Garrett said. "You want him to take every rep, but sometimes these things happen. I do think he's become a better player because of the experiences that he's had over the first couple of years of his career.

"I think he's at a higher level now than he was last year at this time. Hopefully, he can get back from this thing as quickly as possible and take advantage of the last couple of weeks of the preseason."

Claiborne lost his starting job last year after missing the entire preseason due to a knee injury. He suffered an injury to his left shoulder in the regular-season opener and underwent offseason surgery after playing hurt all season.

Safety Matt Johnson, another oft-injured defensive back from the Cowboys' 2012 draft class, returned to Dallas on Thursday to visit a specialist in an attempt to determine if back problems are the cause of his chronic hamstring issues. Johnson has yet to play in a regular-season game for the Cowboys and has not practiced since straining his hamstring in the first week of camp.

Rookie safety Ahmad Dixon, who impressed coaches during the preseason opener before suffering a concussion, has been cleared to return to practice.

I wouldn't mind trading Claiborne now while he still has some value. I think we could get a 3rd rounder for him since teams are possibly still buying into his potential.

I just wonder what team could be conned by Jerry for even a third.

There's always one sucker.

Bottom line, this story is all too familiar to most of us. We don't need to see anything more from Claibust. He's an injury-prone bust, who rarely makes plays. No sense in pretending that he's going to magically stay healthy and learn to play CB at a high level.

It ain't happening.

Missing on a 1st rounder is one thing but to trade up for the guy really stings.

Jerry hasn't reached his boiling point with him yet. I give it another 3 years or so.

He's going to have to do something.

Which to me is give up like he did on Jenkins and Felix Jones.

Just let his bust ass fade away.

It's the third high draft pick we've actually traded up for who can't seem to stay on the field (or get on it to start with in Lawrence's case). That's a 1st, three 2nds, a 3rd, and a 4th flushed down the drain. Lee, Claiborne, and Lawrence by themselves have cost us nearly two whole drafts and the cost continues to escalate as we must remain committed to them.

Three of the biggest reasons we are so fucked.

If Claibust weren't so injury-prone I could live with him. But when you factor in all the injuries on top of the lackluster play.....he's hard to stomach.

Reliability is a big deal. If you are not reliable AND you suck? Bad things.

Michael Brockers AND Bobby Wagner. I wish the Jones family could be forced to watch video highlights of all three players every week.

Dallas has a knack for finding players who are not only injury prone or underachieving, but also absolutely sensitive bitches about it.

If Brockers were here he'd be just another too-lazy-to-live Marcus Spears clone like all the other LSU linemen.

I've had that thought more than once the last few years. I used to think it had something to do with our S&C program and it still might to some degree but the percentage of our higher round picks that can't find a way to stay on the field is a trip.

It's because they are coddled so much by upper management that when they face the true and due criticism from fans and the media they get all kinds of defensive because they aren't used to it.

Most of these guys in the entire NFL are sensitive, whiney bitches when they bust in the NFL.

They've been coddled and told how fucking special they are since it was apparent they had skill in football.

guys who are so talented that they don't have to work hard, even in college, rarely rise to the occasion in the NFL.
