Dustin Vaughan could force the Cowboys to keep three quarterbacks

ARLINGTON — Dustin Vaughan began his Dallas Cowboys career with about as much of a chance to make the 53-player roster as his parody scouting video on YouTube gave him.

Sure, the team’s scouts liked him enough that the Cowboys gave him a $5,000 signing bonus as an undrafted free agent.

But the Cowboys haven’t carried three quarterbacks on their roster since 2011, when Stephen McGee, a fourth-round pick in 2009, served as a developmental prospect.

“I appreciate absolutely any opportunity I can get,” Vaughan said. “Whether that’s coming in and being the third quarterback, being on the practice squad, it’s my dream to be in the NFL, and right now I’m trying to make this team. However, I can do it. I just need to take every opportunity. One step at a time. I think that’s the most important thing for me.”

Jerry Jones conceded after Saturday’s second preseason game that Vaughan very well may force the Cowboys to keep him on their roster. During training camp, the owner referenced Matt Moore.

Moore, an undrafted free agent, went 21 of 29 for 182 yards with a touchdown, no interceptions and a 100.1 passer rating during the 2007 preseason. The Cowboys cut him, hoping to re-sign him to the practice squad. Instead, the Carolina Panthers picked up Moore as their third-string quarterback, and he started three games that season and 25 for his career.

“We’re going to see a lot of him these next two ballgames I’m sure,” Jones said of Vaughan, “and we’ll see how that plays out. But he could very well [make the active roster as the third quarterback].”

The phrase the Cowboys repeatedly use with Vaughan is “the stage isn’t too big for him,” which is somewhat surprising considering he played at Division II West Texas A&M.

“The thing the coaches have told me multiple times is there’s no excuse now of coming in and being from a smaller school or being a rookie quarterback, because their expectations are going to be high for me,” Vaughan said. “They’re going to coach me that way, and I love being coached that way.

“I think that’s important for me to get past the bright lights and to get past all of that stuff and get to the root of it, which is playing the game of football the way it needs to be played and going out and managing the game like a quarterback needs to manage.”

Vaughan is 10 for 21 for 114 yards and a touchdown in five series of two preseason games. He played the entire fourth quarter against the San Diego Chargers in the first preseason game and entered with 9:32 remaining in the fourth quarter Saturday against the Baltimore Ravens.

He excited the crowd of 77,624 with a pair of touchdown drives to get the Cowboys within four points. On the second drive, he hit back-to-back throws to wide receiver Jamar Newsome, his training camp roommate. The first was a perfect 24-yard pass on a go route that got the Cowboys to the 5-yard line, and, on the next snap, he found Newsome on the corner route.

“I’m not going to lie: I was extremely happy with that [touchdown] pass,” Vaughan said. “It’s always good to get that first touchdown pass in your career. I was definitely excited after that.”

The Cowboys like what they have seen from Vaughan so far, perhaps earning him a spot as a developmental prospect.

“For 6-5, I’m particularly impressed with his feet,” Jones said. “His feet are quicker than they ought to be for 6-5. I liked what I saw out there. Even on the [last] play, he showed some quick feet. We know he’s got that arm.

“For a pre-med guy, though, I thought that last play [a pass after crossing the line of scrimmage, ending the game on a 10-second runoff] lacked something. He’ll learn how to manage that. But still I thought he showed something really good.”

I like the way the guy carries himself. Weeden is a trainwreck, I would rather keep him. We are going to suck when Romo goes down anyways.

I would just as soon just keep two and Vaughn be the second one we keep.

I said last week I liked him. He is pretty poised for a youngster and his physical make up is perfect. Strong arm, and good pocket presence for the most part. Last week he took a little too much time to git rid of the ball but that is the easiest lesson to teach a QB.

I didn't watch him last week since I turned off the game in disgust. But I liked the guy last night. Much better than any other 3rd QB we have had around here in a long time and probably better than some of the backups like McGee.

Of course the logical thought goes to him being another Matt Moore.

I am torn on whether to make an exception and keep him. There are a lot of very bad units on this team where we will need to go deep at just to have options in terms of bodies because nobody is good enough (read: the DL).

But I do think he is worth hanging onto more than a lot of turds. You know, like Joseph Randle.

IRVING, Texas -- Few things excite fans in training camp more than the play of an unsung quarterback fighting to make a team.

In 2003 and ‘04, Tony Romo was that guy for the Dallas Cowboys. He was the unknown guy from Eastern Illinois who blossomed into a Pro Bowler and one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL after three years as a backup and even a backup to the backup.

Matt Moore did it in 2007 for the Cowboys. Rudy Carpenter was that guy in 2009. Last year it was Alex Tanney.

Dustin Vaughan has completed 10 of 21 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown in two preseason games.
This year it is Dustin Vaughan, who is more like Romo and Tanney, coming from West Texas A&M with a YouTube hit. Tanney’s video was that of a trick shot artist. Vaughan chose a Christmas sweater and less-than-stellar form in a spoof of his résumé.

In two preseason games, Vaughan has completed 10 of 21 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. He has looked the part, but is he Romo or Moore, who went on to start games for the Carolina Panthers and Miami Dolphins, or is he Carpenter or Tanney?

“We’re going to see a lot of him these next two ballgames I’m sure, and we’ll see how that plays out,” owner and general manager Jerry Jones said after Saturday’s game. “But he could very well [make the final roster as the No. 3 quarterback].”

Vaughan has a big arm, as his 24-yard completion down the sideline to Jamar Newsome attested. He also has an understanding of the game with his 5-yard TD to Newsome after the Ravens stacked the line for the run. In his first preseason work against the San Diego Chargers, he impressed with his ability to move around and buy time.

“I think the main thing, the way to kind of stay sane through this entire process is you’ve got to take it one day at a time,” Vaughan said.

He likely won’t see much or any action Saturday against the Miami Dolphins with the starters expected to play into the second half. He could see a ton of action in the preseason finale vs. the Denver Broncos on Aug. 28. The conundrum the Cowboys could face is if Vaughan plays too well and a team claims him should they try to sneak him through waivers.

The Cowboys have not kept three quarterbacks on the active roster since Stephen McGee in 2011 joined Romo and Jon Kitna. For as well as Vaughan has played, the Cowboys could have too many needs elsewhere on the roster, especially on defense, to keep a third quarterback this year behind Romo and Brandon Weeden.

In order for Vaughan to make it to the practice squad, he would have to clear waivers after the final cuts. Moore didn’t in 2007. Tanney did last year.

“I appreciate absolutely any opportunity that I can get,” Vaughan said. “Whether that’s coming in being the third quarterback or on the practice squad, it’s my dream to be in the NFL and right now I’m trying to make this team and however I can do it I just need to take every opportunity.”

I would keep 3 and Hanie would be the 3rd. Like Booze said, we're going to suck anyway if Romo goes down. Might as well see if we can get one of them to develop into something. Weeden has no value. He'll probably retire before Tony does.

Feh. Hanie is a bum. I'd cut his ass right now and give all his reps to Vaughan.

I'm waiting for Kellen Moore to get cut so we can solve this back up QB thing once and for all.

Linehan friendly.

I completely agree. Weeden will never be a show stopper but he is more reliable than Hanie. Vaughn is a keeper.

The only drag on that is if they want to "hide" him in the hopes of keeping his tape to a minimum, it might be better to have Hanie taking the game reps.

All in all, in QB poor league, he's likely to be snapped up by someone, even if he's on the practice squad.

I mean guys like Curtis Painter are actually third stringers in this league still.

Agreed all around. But I was talking more along the lines if they are considering him for the 53. Hanie has no chance of making that. If they're considering keeping Vaughan, throw him to the wolves and see if he's got anything worth developing.

I can imagine they have probably seen that from practice. Playing in schlub duty isn't going to change that. I am torn. Wouldn't mind seeing him a lot, but I get it if they try to hide him.

I'd give him all the snaps and make him the #1 backup if he plays alright. Weeden isn't leading us to all kinds of big wins if Romo can't play, he's just a progress stopper.

I would love to get rid of Weeden. Just the thought of him starting games sickens me. It would be like watching Hutchinson all over again. Right down to his too close together eyes.

But I think they are actually thinking he will be okay, or they are just having him around so the Walrus wants to return to redeem his pet QB when he takes over for Garrett.
