Ben Gardner to undergo shoulder surgery
August, 14, 2014
By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- Ben Gardner's rookie season with the Dallas Cowboys will end before it can really begin.

Gardner, a seventh-round pick, needs left shoulder surgery that will ultimately land the defensive end on injured reserve. He suffered the injury on July 26 but returned for some work on Aug. 3 only to realize there was not enough strength for him to continue playing. His senior season at Stanford was ended early because of a torn pectoral muscle.

Gardner confirmed the news via social media.

He is the second Cowboys draft pick to need surgery. Second-round defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence had a broken foot repaired and could miss the first three to six regular-season games. The Cowboys were hoping Gardner could be part of the defensive line rotation.

If the Cowboys place Gardner on injured reserve now he would be subject to waivers and could be claimed by another team. If they wait to the first cut-down date on Aug. 26, they can move him straight to injured reserve.

This is comical, I don't know what Jerry Jones did but he jinxed this team, and it looks like it will never end...

I think this may not be a terrible thing though...with the numbers, albeit bad numbers, we have on the DL he might have been a cut. Now we can IR him for the year.

As one defensive linemen headed to Chicago for surgery, another has taken his place.

The Cowboys have signed Zach Minter, sources said. The 6-foot-1, 297-pound defensive tackle was waived by Cincinnati on Aug. 8. Minter, an undrafted rookie out of Montana State, spent his first season with Chicago, appearing in two games. He did not register a tackle.

Minter is in Oxnard. Cornerback Korey Lindsey has been waived to make room for him on the roster.

About the time Minter was singing his contract, Ben Gardner announced on Twitter that he was flying to Chicago for surgery on his left shoulder. The seventh round pick from Stanford will spend his rookie season on injured reserve.

So, to an extent, we're already churning through linemen like last year. It's only going to get better/worsse in that regard.

Minter was a two-time All-Big Sky player for Montana State, where he started in 40 of his 44 career games and made 188 career tackles with 31.5 tackles for loss and 17.5 sacks.
