OXNARD, Calif. -- Every day of Dallas Cowboys training camp we’ll offer up a wake-up call that offers a quick review of the previous day and a preview of the current day.
Today’s schedule: The Cowboys will hold their final full day of practice in Oxnard, California, with a 3:45 p.m. PT workout. Jason Garrett’s news conference is at noon PT.
Quick thoughts on Wednesday’s practice:
•Dez Bryant has a physical style of play, especially down in the red zone. He can outmuscle corners at the line and in the air for passes. But it was how Bryant avoided physical play Wednesday that was surprising and left Carlos Rogers looking foolish. Expecting Bryant to crash into him in red zone one-on-one drills, Bryant deftly worked around Rogers for the easiest pitch-and-catch touchdown he has had all camp from Tony Romo.
•One concern from Brandon Weeden the past few days: he has tried to force throws. He has needed to see receivers come open before making the throws instead of throwing it before receivers break free. He had a pick on late throw to James Hanna in team drills by Sio Moore and had an interception in a two-minute drill.
•After DeMarco Murray broke free for a first-down run in team drills, Romo yelled over to play-caller Scott Linehan, “Helluva third-down call, baby.”
•Lance Dunbar’s speed catches a lot of people off guard. Working as a gunner on the punt team Dunbar easily eluded Oakland corner Taiwan Jones off the line. Considering the amount of press coverage Jones plays and the lack of work outside Dunbar sees, it was stunning to see how smooth Dunbar was in getting down the field.
What I’m watching: With this being the last practice of camp and the players coming off a day at the beach following their second practice against the Raiders, I want to see if players have their attention on the charter flight home on Friday than on the last full practice of camp.
Tony Romo will play Saturday against the Ravens, but will he practice for a third straight day? He has not done that yet in camp with how the schedule has fallen.
Safety Ahmad Dixon is expected back to practice after suffering a concussion against San Diego. Garrett said the hope is Dixon will play Saturday against the Ravens.
They said it: “Look, I know for myself I’m more motivated now than I’ve ever been and part of that is because you come up short and you go through that adversity. And ultimately you kind of hold on to the fact that maybe you will have that breakthrough and you believe that. Only way you believe that is the confidence of going out and doing it. It starts with what type of tight end I want to be then it goes down to what kind receiver Dez is going to be and the quarterback and the offensive line and I think it carries over to your football team. Yeah, we’ve been through adversity but I think it just makes it all the more sweeter if you do come out the other side. As I said before nobody really cares about last year or the last three years. We’ve got to go earn that and that’s been our approach all camp. We don’t really get too high or too low. We understand that we’re just building to the season and hopefully playing our best football.” – Jason Witten on whether the past failures drive this team.
