Arizona State OL Chip Sarafin announces he's gay

When Rams seventh-round pick Michael Sam told the world he was gay in February, it was hailed as a milestone event in the sport to have the first openly gay NFL draft prospect who would go on to become the league's first openly gay active player.

Six months later and, perhaps, inspired by Sam, Arizona State offensive lineman Chip Sarafin came out publicly to a local magazine. He is believed to be the first major, active college football player to come out as gay.

Sarafin told Compete magazine that his Sun Devils teammates found out this past spring.

"It was really personal to me," Sarafin said. "It benefited my peace of mind greatly."

The 6-foot-6, 320-pound redshirt senior arrived in Tempe as a walk-on and is a backup center. Arizona State says he did not see any action his first two seasons with the team but played on special teams in 2013.

The announcement that Sarafin is gay came almost as a footnote in the profile of him in the Phoenix magazine, which focused mostly on his pursuit of a masters degree in biomedical engineering.

So, is this going to be a regular thing?

New college year, those coming out announce it?

Coming out for the draft is going to take on a whole new meaning.

Hey guys, I just wanted to let you know about something. I can no longer live a lie by you not knowing.

I like my nipples clamped and the tip of my wife's thumb up my arse while getting a handi.

Sheeeeeesh I feel so much better now that you know. Hopefully you will still accept me.

Why do we need to know?
Because there's still somewhat of a fascination to it. As time goes on people won't even care.

Also, remember back in February a lot of folks kept saying that Michael Sam's sexuality would be a distraction? 6 months later Sam's hardly a blip on the national radar. Aside from ESPN over-analyzing the two or three plays he was in on during the Rams' preseason game, I haven't seen the distraction. I said as much back in February when the news first broke.

In the American society there's the initial fascination about something new, then people quickly move on to the next topic.

Now I wouldn't sign you as an UDFA. You had 1st round talent, son.

So, does this mean that other players should come out as straight just to make sure they feel better?
