I don't give a shit. But I don't really understand the Raiders players motives either. They aren't really our rival. This isn't even a real game coming up. There are no Cowboys players around to really see it. I mean are they really attempting to get the Cowboys worked up before a practice session?
Looks like it worked.

Cowboys B.W. Webb goes back at Raiders fan who swings helmet at him

By David Moore dmoore@dallasnews.com

The players weren’t the only people going after each other in Tuesday’s practice between the Cowboys and Oakland Raiders.

Cowboys cornerback B.W. Webb ran over to help one of his teammates during a fight. As the fracas spilled into the fence that lines the practice field, a Raiders fan carrying a regular size souvenir helmet swung it at Webb twice.

Webb went back at the fan before coaches pulled him away.

“Somebody came across on my head so I had to let them know this ain’t no play-play out here, man,’’ Webb said. “I wasn’t expecting that but hey, whoever jumps on my back, I had to get them off.

“You’ve got to let them know the only thing protecting you is this fence. I just had to let him know I was here.’’

Webb didn’t appear upset about the incident after practice. He liked the energy practicing against another team brought.

“I loved it,’’ Webb said. “The intensity was up. Everyone was ready to ball. “It was love out there. I had a lot of fun out there today.’’

Cowboys Camp Report: Day 20

August, 12, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of Dallas Cowboys training camp:
  • Anthony Spencer has yet to practice, but the defensive end has picked up his work so much in the past two weeks that the Cowboys might have a decision to make on his availability at the start of the season. Spencer is on the physically unable to perform list as he works his way back from microfracture knee surgery. If he is moved to reserve/PUP, he would miss the first six regular-season games. “Much ahead of where I thought and we all thought he would be,” owner and general manager Jerry Jones said. “It's got a chance. Gives us a real head scratcher as to what to do on the PUP thing but he's got a chance to play and play early. There's no one that knows, and I don't know that he knows, but if he keeps progressing like he is, he's got a shot at coming in there at least after the first game or two. I don't know about the opener but he's far in advance. He's doing things that we didn't expect.” Spencer was able to do cutting and worked some pass-rush moves on the bags off to the side of the practice field.
  • It was a quieter than expected day for Dez Bryant against the Raiders defense. He caught only three passes in team and 7-on-7 drills and two of those catches went for short gains. But one catch was a shoestring grab on a slant from Tony Romo. In 7-on-7 drills Romo overthrew Bryant on a deep ball and Tarell Brown did a good job of defending him on a back shoulder throw down the sideline. Bryant's big play was on a crossing route that opened up in part because of a great blitz pickup by running backDeMarco Murray.
  • Romo completed 10 of 17 passes in team and 7-on-7 drills to bring his unofficial camp totals to 96-of-142. He was unable to connect on deeper throws down the field to Bryant, Terrance Williams and Jason Witten but it wasn't an arm strength issue. He overthrew all three of them in part because of the wind. His best throws were to Witten and Williams, purposely throwing slightly behind them in order to keep them away from an oncoming safety.
  • The Cowboys acquired cornerback Justin Green from the New England Patriots for defensive lineman Ben Bass. Green is more of an outside cornerback with good speed. He will compete with B.W. Webb and Tyler Patmon for one of the final cornerback spots once he arrived. New England is aware of the hamstring injury that has kept Bass out for the last week.
  • The Cowboys and Raiders conclude their work together with a 10:30 a.m. PT practice. The Cowboys will hold a walkthrough in the afternoon.

Fights highlight Cowboys-Raiders practice

August, 12, 2014

By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett confidently predicted that there wouldn’t be any fights during his team’s joint practices with the Oakland Raiders.

Jones
Much to his boss’ delight, Garrett was proven wrong.

A pair of brawls -- one of which involved an altercation between a Cowboys' player and a Raiders' fan -- highlighted Tuesday’s practice between the Cowboys and Raiders. A melee between the Dallas defense and Oakland offense almost spilled into the pro-Raiders portion of the crowd. The Cowboys’ offense and Raiders’ defense brawled after the final play of the practice.

“That passion, that’s mostly what I’d hoped what we would get out of getting these teams together,” said Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones, who half-jokingly praised the remarkable power of Raiders offensive lineman Austin Howard's uppercut punches.

The first brawl started after Cowboys cornerback Morris Claiborne made a form tackle of Raiders tight end Mychal Rivera, slamming him to the ground despite an agreement that there would be no tackling in the practice.

“Oh, man, I just felt like the guy dropped his shoulder on me.” Claiborne said. “I just went up and went for the tackle because he dropped his shoulder on me and it turned out a brawl.”

Claiborne celebrated after the play, waving his arms and yelling toward the Oakland fans standing a few yards away. The Raiders took exception, prompting receiver Greg Little to charge at him. Within seconds, Claiborne and Little were joined by dozens of their teammates in a full-blown melee.

The players weren’t the only ones involved in the fight. One fan swung a helmet at Cowboys cornerback B.W. Webb, who responded by taking a swipe at the fan.

“I just ran over making sure all my brothers are good,” Webb said. “I’ve got all my brothers’ back. Everybody knows that. I mean, we just got into it, man.

“Two teams going after it and happened to be some fans, too. Hey man, it happened. I wasn’t expecting that. But whoever jumped on my back, I had to get them off. Hey, you got to let them know, man, the only thing protecting you is this fence.”

The second brawl started when Cowboys undrafted rookie fullback J.C. Copeland and Raiders linebacker Sio Moore started scrapping away from the play. It wasn’t as fierce as the first fight, although players from both practice fields raced over to the action.

Cowboys-Raiders Round 2 starts at 10:30 a.m. PT Wednesday.

Cowboys wakeup call: Day 21

OXNARD, Calif. – Every day of Dallas Cowboys training camp we’ll offer up a wake-up call that offers a quick review of the previous day and a preview of the current day.

Today’s schedule: The Cowboys and Oakland Raiders will conclude their two-day session with a 10:30 a.m. PT practice. Jason Garrett said the work would mostly focus on different game situations.

Quick thoughts on Tuesday’s practice:

•First-round pick Zack Martin continues to impress. He has won most of his battles with Henry Melton in camp and he welcomed Raiders hefty defensive tackle Pat Sims to the one-on-one pass rush drills by pancaking him. Later Martin dominated defensive end Shelby Harris.

•Ronald Leary took the first-team snaps at left guard for the entire practice for the first time on Tuesday, which was a first in camp. He got planted on his back on the second play of team drills by Antonio Smith. Most of the Cowboys runs were to the left behind Leary and Tyron Smith.

•Wide receiver Cole Beasley had a productive day, toying with Carlos Rogers on a slot route, setting him up with a slow start off the line and a quick head and shoulder fake that allowed Tony Romo a free lane for a nice gain. Beasley later put together a spin move on a bubble screen that left linebacker Larry Asante looking for help.

•Tight ends Gavin Escobar and James Hanna had productive plays. Escobar caught a seam route over Miles Burris with Brandon Weeden perfectly placing the ball over Burris’ shoulder for a big gain. Hanna caught two passes from Weeden for first downs.

What I’m watching: With two fights and a couple of shoving matches in Tuesday’s workout, it will be interesting to see how physical today’s session becomes.

Most of the work will be situational in nature, looking more like the Blue-White scrimmage from Aug. 3. Those can tend to get heated because both sides of the ball will not give in. Remember there was a Cowboy-on-Cowboy fight between Dez Bryant and J.J. Wilcox.

The first-team offense had just three drives against the Raiders defense, totaling 15 plays. With the heavy situational work, that could double depending on how much the coaches on both teams want their regulars to work.

They said it: “It’s a long list and there are some things that can be complicated about that list. I don’t know that I’m going to stand up in a team meeting and go down that list with everybody but that information is in front of them. We will try to keep it in front of them, really that thesis of making sure they understand they control their body, what goes in it is there responsibility. Just keep saying it. Keep letting them know that and inform them about what is allowed and what's not allowed. Hopefully we will learn from everybody situation.” -- Coach Jason Garrett on whether he will re-enforce what is on the NFL’s banned substance list in relation to Orlando Scandrick's suspension.

Garrett Encouraged By Claiborne's Physicality, Strength

Posted 4 hours ago

Rowan Kavner

DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer

OXNARD, Calif. – Morris Claiborne got in position, saw Raiders tight end Mychal Rivera coming straight for him, picked him up and dumped him down near the sideline Tuesday.

That play led to a brawl, but it also highlighted a physical side of the young cornerback’s game that he’s shown before and after a knee injury at camp.

“Really encouraging, and he came back and really is playing the same he played at the outset of camp,” Garrett said. “That all goes back to how he prepared in the offseason. Worked as hard as anybody on our football team, was literally at Valley Ranch six days a week and doing everything he could to get himself healthy and also get himself stronger.”

Garrett said he can see that translate to his game at practice.

“He’s just so much more confident, decisive, physical, ad those are all things he needed to do to get better. We’re seeing it every day. It’s good to see him back out there showing that same stuff.”

When the Cowboys moved up to take Claiborne with the sixth pick in the draft, this is the type of play they expected from him. But Garrett also knew it may take some time for Claiborne to reach his peak.

He also knows he has to show the improvements on Sundays.

“He’s playing better than he did in previous years, certainly,” Garrett said. “Now, this is a practice setting. He needs to play in the game, too, we get that. But we have high hopes for him. We viewed him as a young player, a guy who really could develop when we drafted him. A lot of traits to be able to play right at the outset, but we saw his ceiling being really, really high. I think we’re starting to see a lot of that on the practice field.”

Garrett said when he drafts a player, even if the player is drafted high, that guy needs a chance to grow and develop. In the drill against the Raiders, players were instructed to square up the runner and strike. Garrett said sometimes a player will fall down in that scenario, but he’s pleased with how Claiborne handled it.

Claiborne said he’s just been trying to work his way back into practice and get his legs under him after missing time with knee tendinitis. He missed time late in Wednesday’s practice, but it wasn’t because of his knee.

The corner fell awkwardly on his shoulder, but it wasn’t the one that was surgically repaired and he said he’s not concerned at all that it will keep him out. He said it was planned for him to sit out late anyway.

“It wasn’t like it came out or anything, it was just one of those freaky lands,” Claiborne said. “I just landed on it. It was kind of an awkward land. I felt like he took me down, but I’ll leave that for someone else. Just landed on it wrong.”

Here’s more from Garrett’s conference Wednesday morning:

•The start of the preseason opener, Ahmad Dixon’s yet to be on the field since his big day after getting treated for concussion-like symptoms. Garrett said he doesn’t anticipate Dixon doing much Wednesday, but he does anticipate him practicing Thursday and playing this weekend.

•George Selvie is expected to get more work today in individual drills, and then it’ll be determined how much more work he’ll get.

•The head coach said Tuesday’s practice, despite the brawls, was “fantastic.” He described it as electric an atmosphere he’s ever been in on a practice field in his life. He thought both teams handled the atmosphere well, and while at times some skirmishes broke out after the whistle, he thought the teams did a good job separating and getting back to work.

•The fights started going near both fences. While the fighting can delay practice, Garrett said players have to defend their teammates at some point and have their teammates’ backs. “That’s how you build your football team.” That said, he said poise is important.

•Garrett was clear about how he felt about fans up against the fence trying to get involved in some of those fights: “We’re not for it.”

•The Cowboys acquired cornerback Justin Green from the Patriots in exchange for defensive tackle Ben Bass. Garrett said the Cowboys needed a corner because of the different situations going on at the position. He expects Green with the team late Wednesday, but he’ll miss the scrimmage.

•Garrett said Terrance Williams one of the more unique guys he’s been around in terms of his consistency, development, maturity and ability to respond to hard coaching.

•Ronald Leary took the majority of left guard reps Tuesday, but Garrett said it’s still a competition between Leary and Mackenzy Bernadeau at the position.

•Garrett talked about how there are very few bell cow running backs anymore. He sees DeMarco Murray as a leader of a committee with bell cow traits. He said by committee because he likes the other backs on the roster as well.

•The head coach said Ryan Williams is showing more and more that he’s the kind of runner he’s been his whole life as situations get more competitive. He’s impressed with how hard Williams is working to be a good special teams player.

Day 21 observations from Dallas Cowboys training camp practice: More fights against Oakland Raiders; QB Tony Romo not sharp

By Brandon George / Reporter bgeorge@dallasnews.com
5:34 pm on August 13, 2014

The Cowboys’ 15th practice on the 21st day of training camp Wednesday was their second against the Oakland Raiders. This time, there was no brawl but a few scuffles. The Cowboys and Raiders practiced Wednesday morning, and Dallas took the afternoon off to head to the beach.

The first fight Wednesday was the biggest. After a pass over the middle, Cowboys rookie WR Devin Street and Oakland S Larry Asante locked arms and began pushing and shoving. That led to offensive players on both teams sprinting in to join the two-step.

Later in team drills – on the other field – Cowboys S Johnny Thomas helped start another scuffle that led to players sprinting in to help both sides. Dallas DT Davon Coleman was also involved.

Late in team drills, Cowboys rookie WR Chris Boyd was nailed along the left sideline by Oakland S Jonathan Dowling. That caused WR Dez Bryant to erupt along the sideline. He walked onto the field – when he wasn’t involved in the play – and yelled at Oakland CB Taiwan Jones about the Dowling hit. He wouldn’t let it go. After being pulled back toward the sideline by a Cowboys assistant coach, Bryant went over to the Cowboys first-team offensive line and yelled, “Let’s give them what they want.” After a Brandon Weeden interception, Bryant ran on the field to start jawing with other Oakland players. With the Cowboys switching sides of the field, Bryant continued his banter with Oakland DBs. Rookie WR Devin Street also became involved in the back-and-forth. RB DeMarco Murray had to help pull Bryant away to calm him down.

QB Tony Romo went through his second consecutive practice against Oakland, but wasn’t as sharp Wednesday. During a four-throw stretch, he had three incompletions (one was a throw-away out of bounds and another was an overthrow to WR Dez Bryant) and an interception. Oakland LB Nick Roach intercepted a Romo pass intended for WR Terrance Williams over the middle. Romo’s pass was off target, deflecting off a cornerback’s hands. Roach made a diving interception.

MLB Justin Durant had one of his best practices of training camp Wednesday. He was good in pass coverage and met Oakland running backs in the holes several times to hold the Raiders to short gains.

CB Morris Claiborne landed hard on his right shoulder late in team drills and was looked at by an athletic trainer. Afterward, Claiborne said his shoulder was fine, though he didn’t finish team drills.

WR Terrance Williams jumped high to catch a deep pass down the right sideline late in team drills and landed hard working against Oakland CB T.J. Carrie. He was slow to get up off the field.

Late in team drills, TE Jason Witten caught a Tony Romo pass in traffic over the middle for a touchdown in a two-minute drill. The Cowboys then went for two, and converted when Romo hit Dez Bryant on a quick pass to the left side of the end zone.

Oakland WR – and former Cowboys WR – Andre Holmes beat Dallas rookie CB Terrance Mitchell to the end zone and was wide open but dropped the pass.
Oakland DE Denico Autry would have sacked QB Brandon Weeden late in team drills.

Reserve OT Jermey Parnell was slow to get up after he was rolled up on from behind. Oakland LB Sio Moore hit Cowboys RB Ryan Williams on a run to the left side, and Williams crashed into the back of Parnell’s legs.

Backup QB Brandon Weeden struggled with his accuracy against Oakland. After a play-fake, Weeden’s pass was almost intercepted in team drills by Raiders LB Kaluka Maiava on a throw over the middle intended for WR Dwayne Harris. Later in team drills, Weeden had another pass almost intercepted by Oakland LB Sio Moore when he tried to hit TE James Hanna over the middle. Late in team drills, Weeden’s pass over the middle sailed high and was intercepted by Oakland S Jeremy Deering.

With the Cowboys’ third-team offense on field, Dallas offensive coordinator Bill Callahan yelled, “Check the huddle.” The Cowboys had only 10 players in the huddle on offense. Rookie WR Devin Street then joined the huddle.

Oakland DE Justin Tuck beat Cowboys RT Doug Free to the outside for a would-be sack of QB Tony Romo in team drills.

WR Dez Bryant beat Oakland CB Carlos Rogers inside on a pass to the right from QB Tony Romo. Bryant pulled in the low throw in team drills for about a 15-yard gain.

RB DeMarco Murray had a long run to the left side behind LT Tyron Smith and TE Jason Witten to start team drills against Oakland. Later, Murray was stuffed for no gain by Oakland LB Khalil Mack on a run up the middle.

TE Jason Witten made a one-handed catch on a pass near the right sideline in 1-on-1 drills against Oakland S Jonathan Dowling.

WR Dezmon Briscoe made a nice back-shoulder catch along the left sideline in 1-on-1 drills against Oakland CB Keith McGill.

Rookie WR Devin Street ran right past Oakland CB Carlos Rogers after using a double move and caught a long pass down the right sideline in 1-on-1 drills. Later, Street made a nice catch along the right sideline, reaching high above Oakland CB Chance Casey for the reception.

RB Joseph Randle dropped a pass to the right flat in 1-on-1 drills working against Oakland LB Sio Moore.

WR Dwayne Harris beat Oakland CB Chimdi Chekwa inside for a catch over the middle in 1-on-1 drills. Later, Harris had a nice catch in team drills when he reached high to pull down a Brandon Weeden deep pass down the right sideline in team drills against Oakland CB Chance Casey.

Oakland blocked a Cowboys punt from deep in the back of the end zone.

Cowboys RB D.J. Adams dropped a pass in 1-on-1 drills.

Cowboys FB Tyler Clutts went against rookie LB Anthony Hitchens in one of the team’s 1-on-1 drills in front of all the players. Clutts held Hitchens away from QB Tony Romo. Later, Clutts made a nice juggling catch in the right flat in 1-on-1 drills against Oakland LB Nick Roach. The ball bounced off Clutts’ hands three times before he pulled it in.

Cowboys TE Gavin Escobar slung S Jeff Heath to the ground in another 1-on-1 drill in front of all the players when Escobar ran a seven route to the outside. Later, Escobar dropped a pass over the middle in 1-on-1 drills.

Before practice started, Cowboys TE Jason Witten met with his first position coach in Dallas – Oakland Raiders offensive line coach Tony Sparano.

New Houston Rockets forward Trevor Ariza was at practice Wednesday.
