OXNARD, Calif. -- The Dallas Cowboys anticipate taking defensive end Anthony Spencer off the physically unable to perform list before the season begins.

Spencer, who is recovering from October microfracture knee surgery, would have to sit out at least the first six games if he is on the PUP list to start the season. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones indicated that Spencer is likely to instead be on the 53-man roster after the Cowboys make their cuts.

“He’s getting there at a faster pace than we thought,” Jones said Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan. “We’re hoping that when we get to our 53-man cutdown that we’ll be dealing with that problem. The problem is, do we keep him on the roster because he’s going to be ready to go in a game, or do we PUP him, which would mean we couldn’t use him for six games?

“It’s looking like we’ll keep him on the roster.”

The Cowboys do not expect Spencer to be ready to play in the season opener. The hope is that Spencer could be ready for the third or fourth game, which would justify the team carrying him on the roster to start the season.

We'll be getting Spencer and Scandrick back just in time to turn a winless team into a 12-4 Super Bowl contender.

The fact of the matter is a healthy Spencer and Lawrence is a completely difference defense. I just have my doubts that Spencer will ever be healthy this year in the sense that he will be like the old Spencer.

I am looking at Randy Gregory, Leonard Williams, and Mario Edwards right now.

Sounds like smoke-blowing in the face of the preseason opening disaster. Anything to buy even a little hope. Spencer's and Melton's knees, Crawford's Achilles, McClain's ankle.

This is getting real.

Frank Gore might run for 250 yards week one. With that, even Kyle Caepernick will look competent and everyone will start talking again about how he's Steve Montana Cunningham and not the average passer he is.

There's no way to know if that's true or not. Spencer hasn't played in over a year, and Lawrence has never taken an NFL snap. I wouldn't put money on the unit being "a completely different defense" with those two guys on it and healthy; not until they prove they can/can still play.

That's why I referred to Spencer being healthy as Spencer being his old self. I have faith in Lawrence though. I think he was already showing up very well in camp. The injury was really unfortunate for him. He was actually the rookie I had the highest hopes for this upcoming season.

The sad thing is we have to really look at Davon Coleman as a guy who has to be a big contributor right away. That is how pathetic our DL line is now. DOn't get me wrong, I like Coleman as a player, but to have to count on an UDFA so early is alarming.

Remember when we did that with Terry Glenn? Good times.

Actually a bit of good news for a change.

But knowing the Cowboys I'm not completely buying it.

I just hope they aren't rushing him back early since they are desperate.

I can't see how this is rushing him. If he is going to be able to play again he should be able to perform. He is a question mark either way. If you sit him another 2 months he won't help the team. Just as well see if he can go since this is his last season in Dallas in all likelihood.
