SAN DIEGO -- Ahmad Dixon's start to Dallas Cowboys' training camp was relatively quiet. The rookie safety’s play in the first preseason game wasn’t.

Dixon, a seventh-round pick out of Baylor, led the Cowboys with 11 tackles in Thursday’s 27-7 preseason loss to the San Diego Chargers. He also didn’t finish the game because of a concussion.

Dixon was involved in the first-team nickel defense with safety Jeff Heath moving to the slot out of necessity considering the Cowboys’ dearth of cornerbacks. Dixon remained in the game until suffering a concussion while making one of his tackles. He was a little woozy and the athletic training staff was able to take him off the field.

He was replaced by Johnny Thomas, who signed with the Cowboys on Wednesday and has yet to practice with the team.

"I thought for a guy who is young and hasn’t played that much, he seemed to show up," coach Jason Garrett said of Dixon. "Now, we’ll have to go back and evaluate how he covered and how he did some other things defending the run. But for the most part when you make some of those tackles that he did, TFLs and also his open-field plays, that shows up pretty well in his first game."

Dixon was known as a big hitter in college. That showed up. As did a late job picking up a tight end on an 18-yard reception on third-and-7 in the third quarter.

But there were some encouraging signs.

"He was coming downhill like a rocket," safety Barry Church said. "Reminded me of myself a little bit. But he played good. He made a lot of tackles, wrapping up well. He’s just got to get those assignments clear and he’s going to be a good player for us."

He also might need to adjust the way he tackles.

"He’s got to stop leading with the crown of your helmet," Church said. "That’s something he’ll learn over time."

Man, you know your front 7 fucking suck when your safety is leading the team in tackles.

Pretty much. And if he's an in-the-box safety, he really has zero utility in this scheme.

Exactly. He's playing 20-25 yards off the line at the snap in this system, and is making the most tackles. Horrendous. It's going to be a long year.

He tackled and hit hard as expected but unfortunately most of the plays I noticed him in on occurred at least 5 yards past the line of scrimmage.

Make some plays closer to or behind the LOS then I'll be impressed.

He's not good in coverage but I'd still consider him an upgrade over Heath because at least Dixon can tackle.

All the rookies did what I expected.

Martin looked good and sharp.

Hitchens looked like the reach he was. Decent backup type, maybe, but not ready and will never be.

Street appeared promising. Not going to impress you with flash, but gets by on substance.

Bishop was a bull in a china shop that needs to develop but could have tools.

Mitchell was as grabby and boom or bust per play as he was at Oregon.

With the talent acquisition piece so challenging in Dallas, we needed to get lucky with some of the later picks and based on a small sample size of one game, it is not all that exciting.

W8NC I guess.

You got all of that from last night, eh?

Aside from getting beat in coverage early, I thought he settled down and played ok.

Nothing spectacular, but did have a couple nice plays. Kind of like a rookie 4th rounder in his very first NFL game action.

You and I are basically saying the same thing. Except that he should have been a 6th rounder instead of the third player we took to fortify the overall talent on this roster.

No, not really. I'm not saying he'll never be ready. I'd hope to see more than his very first preseason game before making that statement.

I thought he sucked ass at first, but after settling down he made some pretty nice plays.

Kinda hard to label him one way or the other after 1 partial game.

It was not like he just didn't have an entire collegiate career where he was the third best linebacker on his own team.

Dixon has a concussion. This defensive front is terrible *with* its starters healthy and playing. Without them you should expect a lot more back seven injuries. A lot more.

What I find a little odd is that Dixon did exactly, almost to the letter, what his scouting report said. Passionate player, can't cover, but will knock your block off.

Why is anyone surprised?

Guys like him don't have a place in the league anymore unless he is a special team's ace.

Window lickers will love the woo hits if he has to play and make excuses when TEs are running loose 20 yards downfield.

Sounds familiar except we didn't blow a top 10 pick on this one.

Or even a 3rd.

I don't know about surprised but he is already a better player then Heath. At least he is solid in run support. Heath sucks at tackling and he can't cover.
