DeMarcus Lawrence out 8-10 weeks

OXNARD, Calif. -- Cowboys second-round pick DeMarcus Lawrence, a defensive end Dallas drafted to help their pass rush this year, will miss eight to 10 weeks with a broken right foot, sources said.

Lawrence was injured during a pass-rush drill against left tackle Tyron Smith on Tuesday afternoon. Lawrence tried a speed rush around the end, but Smith moved with him and drove the Lawrence into the ground. Lawrence's foot appeared to get caught under him awkwardly, and he uttered a profanity as the play ended.

He stayed on the ground for a few minutes before limping off the field with trainer Jim Maurer. He was then transported off the field on a cart.
The Cowboys wanted Lawrence to be a major part of their defense as a rookie, which is one of the reasons they moved up to get him in the draft. He was competing with Jeremy Mincey for a starting position.

"His attitude ... you can't discourage him," owner Jerry Jones said of Lawrence on Tuesday. "Physically, his hands, his quickness, his athletic ability, but basically the fact that he doesn't get discouraged. Matter of fact, if he's blocked, he's that much more tenacious, and that may be the quality to have, other than athletic ability as a pressure player."

The Cowboys released DeMarcus Ware this past offseason, and they hoped Lawrence could help compensate for his absence. The Cowboys had just 34 sacks last season, which tied for 25th in the NFL. George Selvie led the team with seven, which doubled his career total. Defensive tackle Henry Melton, coming off a torn ACL, is the most accomplished pass-rusher on the team with 15.5 career sacks.

"We thought that Jason needed to get an extension based on uh injuries on the defensive side of the football relative to Sean Lee and Demarcus Lawrence"

That's only like 4 or 5 games, considering that I have no expectations for this shit team, who cares?

Qbs drafted by the Cleveland browns have a better shot than our 2nd round defenders.

We have shitty luck, and it seems fitting. There's 2 key defenders down thus far....anyone think we're done here?

Are there any edge rushers out there available?

Keisel and Carraker… that's about it.

Keisel is pretty much done-- but he at least could provide some veteran situational help. Carraker was hurt, but claims he's 100% and wanting to make a comeback. I'd definitely kick the tires on him and see what kind of shape he's in.

Jerry should know by now that making deals with the Debil always comes back to bite you in the ass.

Those guys are not 4-3 edge guys though.

He can't be on PUP to start the year or he can't play until like week 6.
Once a player has practiced even one time they can't be put on PUP

That's true, so they will most likely put him on IR designated to return.

Yes, they can. There are two different PUP lists. One for preseason, one for the season. If you practice, you're right. You can't be put on the PS PUP. But he could still be put on the RS PUP. Off the top of my head, I can't remember how long it is. 6 or 8 weeks. Something like that. Once that time is up, you either have to release the player, activate them, or IR them.

"Second, there's the Reserve/PUP (regular season PUP list). Any player starting on the Active PUP list (and has not practiced) with the team becomes eligible for the Reserve/PUP at the end of training camp. Once a player practices during training camp, all PUP list options are off the table. This is important to note. Both Lynch and Ramsey could be cleared within a day or two of the start of training camp, but starting them on the PUP list leaves it on the table as an option if there is a setback."

There is a short-term IR now, maybe we can put him on that, not sure what the rules are though.
