Gavin Escobar has lined up like a wide receiver, but he’s not looking to be classified as one

OXNARD, Calif. — Gavin Escobar is five pounds heavier than he was at this time last year.

The Dallas Cowboys’ second-year tight end is weighing in at 254 pounds, and he feels much stronger than when he entered training camp as a rookie.

“I know a lot more of it is just strength,” Escobar said. “That was more important for me to just get stronger to help out in the run game.”

In May, Cowboys Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten said he was proud of Escobar for adding strength and working in the off-season to become a better blocker.

Escobar was on the field for 207 snaps last season. His 2014 goal is to see that number increase.

“I want to be on the field as much as possible, so whatever it takes to do that,” Escobar said. “Obviously, more production this year, an increased role in the running game. Just overall, more of a role.”

And it probably doesn’t hurt that he has a nine-time Pro Bowler in Witten showing him the way.

“It’s great being able to learn from Jason,” Escobar said. “All I really have to do is watch his film and just try to do that. Just being able to learn from him every day is great.”

Escobar’s greatest strength is his pass-catching ability. And at 6-6, he gives quarterbacks a big target.

Cowboys offensive play-caller Scott Linehan is trying different ways to get last year’s second-round pick involved in the passing game. During training camp practices, Escobar has often lined up out wide.

But don’t expect him to follow in Jimmy Graham’s footsteps and make a case that he’s a wide receiver.

“Nah,” Escobar said. “I don’t think that worked out.”

Last month, Graham, the New Orleans Saints’ Pro Bowl tight end, was denied request to be considered a wide receiver. The franchise tag for a tight end this year is $7 million. The tag number for a wide receiver is $12 million.

If used properly Escobar can be a good assert. Dallas has misused him up to this point.

He seriously needed to build strength just like he said. The sad thing is you don't normally attribute this kind of need to develop to a 2nd round pick, but Dallas continues to gamble in that round. Carter, Lee, Escobar... they have been a collective whiff.

In true Cowboys fashion, Carter and Lee have flashed just enough talent to keep the team hooked before utterly failing. Getting a solid contribution from Escobar would be a welcome and total surprise.

I prefer him in this role anyway. He's never going to block. He will always be considered a specialist or a bust.

It's past the time to be concerned where he was picked. He is on the roster and he needs to be utilized according to his attributes.

You completely missed his overall point because you have this insatiable to desire to not discuss draft status. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it will be brought up ad nauseum when talking about any player that has the potential to bust.

Where does the article reference his draft position?
I wasn't talking about the article. I was talking about the post you quoted. He made a very clear point that he hopes we end our streak of potential busts in the second round. Then you went off your normal "please, can we stop talking about draft position" rant.

It wasn't a rant and what I indicated was that it's time for the club to use him where his strengths are.. I also said it doesn't matter anymore what position he was drafted. I don't see how you determine that to be a rant.

Because you have said it 75 million times. We get your position on it, but there is no way people aren't going to bring up his or anyone else's draft position when discussing their bust potential.

Ring a bell?
Use it in its context. The article is about using him as a receiver now since he wasn't ever going to be a utilized as a blocking TE. Give up on the reason and place he was drafted and use his strengths. What's the problem with that and why does it it you in attack mode?

Keep on making your points LT...if people quit repeating the same stuff over and over again this place would be barren. Really, the post ravi made was a point I have seen countless times. Maybe he needs to be reined in too. :lol

My comments were directed at what I think the organization should do with Escobar. For some reason they are taken as being directed at the poster. Read them again with that in mind.
