Cowboys not generating much interest at training camp

Posted by Mike Florio on July 27, 2014, 9:51 AM EDT

The Cowboys may still be America’s Team, but they’re currently not Oxnard’s.

Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram has been mentioning the attendance at training camp. As pointed out in Saturday’s one-liners, only 3,503 total fans showed up in the first two days.

When reporting that number on Twitter, Charean predicted that the Cowboys “should have a big crowd at the kickoff Saturday.”

And only 4,279 showed up.

That’s a total (abacus engaged) of 7,782 fans in three days. Washington, in contrast, drew more than 11,000 on Saturday alone at training camp in Richmond.

While the Cowboys technically shouldn’t care about how many Californians show up to watch an NFL team based in Texas practice, at a certain level, Jerry Jones and company need to be concerned that the camp attendance may be a barometer of overall, sea-to-shining-sea interest in the NFL’s official even-Steven franchise, 8-8 for each of the last three years and .500 on the nose dating back to 1997.

While Charean’s tweets don’t mention attendance in past years, she clearly regards the numbers as alarming — and she notes that, if camp were held in San Antonio, 10,000 would have been there. The trend bears watching in other national metrics, from TV ratings in prime-time games to jersey and merchandise sales, to attendance when the Cowboys take the show on the road to cities where the home team can’t fill up a stadium without having a truly national team paying a visit.

It could be that America’s Team no longer is. If it ever really was.

I'm one of the first to give the current Jones/gingerfuck Cowboys hell over anything but without the average attendance from past years this means nothing

Yeah, that's what I kept reading for, hoping we could compare it to last year, but no dice. I have been looking around, but can't find it yet. (yes, I'm bored)

Yep.

Now if we could just get this type of apathy towards the Cowboys from the fans in Texas I believe that would move the needle enough to force a little change. But only if it's sustained apathy. Not a one week boycott but one where the fans give Jerry and the Cowboys the middle finger for at least a month during the season.

The only thing that could make me happier is for Jerry to decide he is only flying Malaysian Airlines from now on.

The least of things to be concerned about the Cowboys is training camp fan attendance. Surely the writer has abandoned the reason he is there.

Disinterest of fans actually might make Jones change his ways. If not him, then his kids who aren't nearly as rich.

Southern California is not a good barometer for football fans. They won't even support a local NFL team.

I love it, just because I'm sure Jerry hates not having a packed out show.

I think interest is down because Jerry isn't out chasing TO and other big name FAs. We have dumb fans...guarantee we'd have the biggest camp out there if we had drafted Manziel instead of Martin. The lack of interest is not what the Cowboys want, but to me it signals a welcome philosophy change.

Agree. It just a TC in Southern Calif. Not enough glitz for these folks.

Crowds smaller so far at Cowboys camp
July, 28, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- Drawing a crowd has never been a problem for the Dallas Cowboys.

Through the first four days of training camp, the crowds have been smaller than normal.

Last year the Cowboys drew 13,230 fans in the first four days of training camp. Through the first four days of camp this summer the Cowboys have had 11,000 fans. At their opening practice last year, the Cowboys drew 6,614 fans on Sunday. On Saturday with their pre-practice extravaganza, the Cowboys drew 4,279 fans.

Maybe three straight 8-8 seasons are starting to catch up with the Cowboys. Maybe it’s one playoff win since 1996. Maybe it was the Oxnard Salsa Festival.

“Those things will take care of themselves,” executive vice president Stephen Jones said of the crowds. “It’s my understanding there’s a festival in town this weekend and some of the people who would normally come here, some of them are over there. The crowds will take care of themselves.

“We’re worried about winning, putting a good team on the field; not about the crowds.”

:lol at Stephen calling comic-con a festival(think that's what he's referring to)

also this sheds a little light on why Jerry decided to publicly lament passing on Manziel
