Garrett: No Romo at afternoon practice
July, 25, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- Despite proclaiming earlier in the week Tony Romo will be full go once the Dallas Cowboys begin training camp, coach Jason Garrett said the quarterback will not take part in Friday’s afternoon workout.

Romo, who had back surgery in December and did not take part in competitive drills in the spring, was limited in Thursday’s practice, which did not include any 11-on-11 session. Romo was in the Friday walk-through, taking all of his normal snaps. Garrett initially said Romo would do less in the afternoon practice before saying he “will not do anything this afternoon.

“Our approach with him throughout training camp is to be very mindful of being out there twice a day, and particularly twice a day on consecutive days,” Garrett said.

After Thursday’s workout Romo said he does not have back pain but he has to go through a prolonged daily program to keep his back strong and loose. Romo said he could have done more Thursday but he backed off when the offense did not have competitive drills against the defense. He said the amount of work will pick up once the players practice in pads starting Saturday.

After Friday’s walkthrough Romo had a long discussion with executive vice president and head athletic trainer Jim Maurer.

With Saturday morning’s walkthrough focusing on special teams, Garrett said he anticipates Romo taking first-team snaps. The Cowboys hold an hour walkthrough in the mornings and a two-hour practice in the afternoon on most days. Their first scheduled off-day is Monday.

“The two-a-days can be an issue, and then the back-to-back two-a-days,” Garrett said. “I know we’re only out here for a walkthrough format, but when you’re coming off a back issue like Tony has sometimes just being out on your feet like that can be taxing. So we just want to be mindful as we start training camp, continue to communicate with him and others to make sure we’re all on the same page. He’s making progress.”

After Thursday’s practice, Jones said the Cowboys feel good about Romo’s health.

“We’re not trying to win the East tomorrow,” Jones said on Thursday. “It’s a long training camp and the last thing we want to do is act like we’re playing Sunday with him. We want to be conservative but at the same time give him the work he needs.”

Yesterday: Romo is a full go. Not worried.

Today: Romo is being held back; precautionary. Little worried.

Tomorrow: Out for season.

Anyone this is surprised by this has bought the official organizational bullshit line that the surgery was no big deal.

It's going to shorten his career.

We like where we are at QB. Didn't think twice about drafting one. We got that Weeden fella. Tony had his spine removed but he's gonna be fine.

Yep just like the cyst removal, everything is fine nothing to see here. Guess it was just a coincidence we abandoned the deep ball to start off the season last year

God I love the uniform and hate to see them lose, but I'd laugh my ass off if Romo was IR'd.

The best hope the Cowboys have to do anything this year and it would please you if he couldn't play? Very puzzling.

Yeah, I could see everyone here laughing their asses off.... Then Weeden comes in and starts dropping bombs everywhere, next thing you know we are 2 rounds deep in the playoffs and picking 26th in the draft. QB position is set for the next ten years (Weeden will only be 50), Josh Brent makes the Pro Bowl and is voted come back player of the year. We draft a corner, big & tall developmental project to be our Richard Sherman, he is touted as the missing link in the defense and now we are expected to be contenders next season...

Who's laughing now?

I'm open for other candidates. Who would be your choice?
I know, 31 td 10 ints. Pro Bowl.
Looking at Orton after a whopping 2 days practice and no timing what so ever, I'd like to think he could have done better. Now, I'm not a Orton fan, but come on. Romo barley beat a far inferior Eagles team earlier and after seeing him struggle against a Skins team who were allowing 30pts a game, I don't see him coming close to beating the eagles the last game. Orton statistically outplayed Romo against the same team, again, before the egals went on a roll.
Romo not throwing the ball down the field cost this team the last 2 seasons.

Not running the ball effectively cost this team the last two years. Whether that's on Romo for checking out of plays or our coach in training that a different debate.
