Obama administration in its 2013 budget requested $25.6 billion in federal spending on the drug war. Of that, $15 billion would go to law enforcement, interdiction and international efforts.

Drug Policy Alliance estimates that when you combine state and local spending on everything from drug-related arrests to prison, the total cost adds up to at least $51 billion per year. All that money spent and no real reduction in drug addictions.

We have more people incarcerated for drug related crimes than any other country in the world and in 2010 50% of the inmates in federal prison where there for drug related crimes. Still just below 50% now.

This money can be used for so many other things that would be worth while for our country. What business is it of the government what we decide to put into our own bodies. Prohibition doesn't work.

I say yes, what do you say?

Damn, 2233 is on fire tonight.

I'm against the war on drugs. I think it's a waste of money as it is being implemented. That being said, some drugs should still be illegal and prosecuted.

I struggle with that. I have issues with the hard stuff but I don't think someone else should be able to tell me what I can put into my body. I also think it would be a huge revenue stream, create jobs, reduce crime , reduce prison, help create businesses, and so much more. I also read it is substantially cheaper to treat an addict them it is to incarcerate one.

Yes, legalize all drugs. As my daddy says, "we are all white and 21".

You don't necessarily have to legalize them all in order to end the "war". Just don't devote so many resources and so much time and energy to them. Whole teams of specialists, interdiction, undercover operations, financial specialists are all devoted to the "war on drugs". Just stop funding that and let cops arrest people with drugs when they find them in the normal course of investigations into actual problems and complaints. Like, if you're investigating a drug dealer shooting another drug dealer and searches lead to a big stash of drugs, go ahead and lay the drug charges on too, just in case you can't make the murder case stick.

I think there are some drugs that honestly most people aren't equipped to handle.

Start with marijuana legalization and you will see how things do.

Okay. Legalize them. Make all users register then take their drivers licence away from them. I don't care if they want to frick up them selves just keep them from fricking up other people.

I agree. Let's do it. I am talking about people who impair themselves and drive. That's just too dangerous to tolerate in my opinion. I can't believe anyone would think it's okay.

You said make them register then take away their license. You didn't mention anything about if they drove impaired. I'm with you there one, offense lose your license for 5 or more years. I wouldn't care if you took their license for life.

As I said earlier you obviously haven't heard my rant on this topic.. It has always been about people who use drugs or alcohol and then get into a vehicle and drive. The prior comment is just an out growth of that position with a touch of sarcasm.

If there is one thing I have learned as an attorney it's that taking someones license away rarely prevents them from continuing to drive.

Yeah that's why it's so damn scary. The ones that would get high and drive would have that mentality. It's hard enough navigating traffic with clear heads but battling impaired drivers adds an element that I detest.

Just like making guns illegal doesn't stop bad guys from using them. Same concept. Not that you have advocated otherwise, just felt I should derail the thread. :unsure

Well, to tell you from experience, you should fear drunk drives way more than drivers on weed.

I don't distinguish. Impaired is impaired. The thread however states drugs so that could be weed or something else. I just have a thing about impaired drivers.
