Remembering Joe Delaney, 31 years later

Posted by Mike Florio on June 29, 2014, 10:46 AM EDT

Have you heard of Joe Delaney? If not, you need to read this. And if you have, it’s time for the annual reminder of who he was and what he did, 31 years ago today.

Delaney, a Chiefs running back who had spent two years in the NFL as of June 29, 1983, noticed that a trio of young boys had waded into a man-made water hole. It contained an unknown deep end, and they quickly were in trouble.

As Frank Deford, then of Sports Illustrated, later explained it, “There were all sorts of people around, but only Joe dashed to the pond. There was a little boy there. ‘Can you swim?’ he asked Joe.
“‘I can’t swim good,’ Joe said, ‘but I’ve got to save those kids. If I don’t come up, get somebody.’ And he rushed into the water.”

Delaney saved one of the boys. Two drowned. Delaney drowned, too.

Joe Delaney died at the age of 24, with a wife and three young girls.

As a rookie in 1981, Delaney rushed for 1,121 yards. He sacrificed a bright future to help save three young strangers.

If you’ve got a spare 22 minutes, watch the documentary the Chiefs produced to honor a true hero and a true role model.

All I really remember about Delaney besides how The Chiefs became pass-happy to compensate was how sad that story was. I think basic safety education has changed things a lot since then.

The guy's actions were heroic, but we've got to look at them in hindsight as a lesson in why it's important to hold landowners liable for not fencing off and/or posting warnings around unsafe land and for parents to know where the Hell their damned kids are and what they are doing.

Delaney also didn't think about his family right there, the people he loved most. I especially can't get my mind around how he could do that to them. Working together, you'd think people could find some jumper cables or tie some clothes together to make a rope. Most of the time when you try to save someone from drowning, they grab hold of you and pull you under.

Whatever. The guy wasnt fucking Macguyver.

And if everyone thought like you no one would ever try to help another person. Just worry about what is best for them and theirs.

Yep Schmitty has been more scarce than bird pee lately.
Funny now that you mention it. I had noticed schmitty not being around much, but until you said something I did not realize I had never seen a bird pee.
