I'm 31 and in the same boat. I picked a bad time to graduate college - 2009. Hopefully I'll at least start paying on a house in a year or two.
I graduated in 2004, but my teaching career was cut short by the financial crisis causing a funding crisis for Texas schools. Rick Perry vetoed a measure to use the rainy day fund to shore up schools until the tax money from the oil boom rolled in, so the districts that had been hiring started laying off teachers and I was stuck looking for a job in that environment. That's how I ended up back in corrections, only now I'm here to stay because my teaching certificate is expired.

I turn 30 in a few months and with a new daughter, the future worries me constantly. Honestly, it feels sometimes like I will never get beyond just getting by, but I keep plugging away.

Something is really off about the fact that I have only spent three decades alive, and yet I remember a time when gas hit $1.85 and that seemed insane. Now it's like, "$3.20?? Better get it while it's cheap!!" WTF.

That's a tough break. There was nothing out there when I graduated. I finally landed with a good company in 2012 and then the one I'm with now in 2013. I wish it was more money. I won't be doing a thing this weekend because I'll have no money for food or gas until Friday. Trips back to Louisiana are expensive. It's decent though. I haven't quite recovered from the money it took to move and then the 4 trips back I've taken.

Imagine your dismay multiplied several times. If you consider the country has eroded then you should begin to understand why guys like me sometimes want to push the panic button.

Good post, but as far as the bold goes, their job has never ever been safer and no body gives crab fisherman a pass on murder
A lack of murders doesn't equal "safe."

If a crack-infested neighborhood has gone several months without a murder or rape, was it safe to be there that whole time?

I have an 8 month old son. I remember when gas was $1.00 per gallon. I think it was $1.25 when I first started driving. It's really what kills me. I wish I was a car person, but I'm not.

I've learned to just not worry anymore. It doesn't do any good.

Having to move twice in two years killed my savings in 2009-2010. Just the gas it took to make a couple of trips across the state in my truck was backbreaking when I was out of work and counting every penny.

I think there are a dozen or two places that are better to deal with police at. But fuck that, this is Gods country, there is no better place to be.
Then head on over. I'm sure they would love a pacifist like you.

The police create enemies when they act the way they do. They created one right here.

I doubt they are worried much.

Poor is relative. I am just getting by, but I am just getting by. I have never really been hungry. My grandmother was poor. Dirt floors, two outfits, all that business. I am not poor.

Ass.
