Randy Moss, Donovan McNabb blame Dallas Cowboys’ problems on coaching

Brian Urlacher can only laugh when some of his buddies joke about him joining the Dallas Cowboys. The eight-time Pro Bowl middle linebacker turned 36 in May and hasn’t played since 2012.

But recently during a roundtable segment filmed for FOX Sports Live, Urlacher only smiled when FOX NFL insider Jay Glazer joked, “you should be calling them, they shouldn’t be calling you.”

Former NFL players Randy Moss and Donovan McNabb joined Urlacher for the nine-minute video analyzing the Cowboys.

“They’re going to be better because last year they were so bad,” Urlacher said of the Cowboys defense that allowed 415 yards per game in 2013. “They didn’t run any Cover-2 last year. Monte Kiffin was calling the defense, it wasn’t my man Rod Marinelli, who is going to be calling the defense this year, so it will be a lot of Cover 2.”

Marinelli was Urlacher’s defensive coordinator for three seasons in Chicago.

But enough about Urlacher. McNabb, the former six-time Pro Bowl quarterback for Philadelphia, explained why he thinks the problems with the Cowboys are not the players on the field.

“I think for the Dallas Cowboys it’s much more than just what we see from the defense and offense, I mean, let’s go upstairs,” McNabb said. “Let’s talk about the coaching staff. How do you go from Monte Kiffin and Marinelli being a position coach to [Marinelli] now being the defensive coordinator and Kiffin being like a position coach? And it’s the same on the offensive end. You had Jason Garrett calling plays, supposedly, then Callahan.”

Then, McNabb went after Garrett.

“I’m still figuring out how he still has a job at this particular point the way we have continued to see this team just continue to crumble,” he said. “He was behind Troy Aikman and he was behind Dan Marino, too. [Garrett was never behind Marino]. You’re behind hall of famers and you see how they carry the two-minute offense. He’s run the two-minute offense himself as a starting quarterback. The way that they control their offense in certain games, how can you lead games in the middle of the third quarter and you end up losing the game?”

McNabb added: “You can’t fire Wade Phillips and hire Jason Garrett and Jason Garrett’s doing worse than Wade Phillips was doing. That’s just not going to get it done. What team is going to follow that?”

Moss also put a large amount of the blame on the Cowboys coaching staff. Even with the losses of DeMarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher, one of the game’s greatest wide receivers says Dallas still has a talented roster.

“When you look on paper, it’s every year that the Dallas Cowboys and Oakland Raiders have a lot of talent on their team,” Moss said. “I mean, talented, top-end players. For the Dallas Cowboys to keep sputtering every year, it’s not the players – some of it falls on the players – but go on up top and see what’s going on.”

Moss specifically blamed the franchise’s coaching staff when the discussion turned to Tony Romo.

“The thing that’s not really fair to Tony Romo is he really hasn’t had that coaching to be able to bring him along,” Moss said. “I’m not sitting here busting Garrett or trying to call Garrett out, but there has not been nothing steady in Dallas. It’s always coaches come and go.”

So, do the Cowboys finally get over the 8-8 hump and make a playoff appearance?

Moss: “Nope.”

I'm all for a good Garrett bashing, but these chuckleheads come across as ignorant.

Do a little friggin research. It's part of your job.

Aside from McNappy's glaring error about Marino, I don't think the core of what he said was all that inaccurate.

Moss hit a home run.

What Urlacher said scares the shit out of me. First, we did run some Cover 2 last year...all teams do. We sucked at that and man, press bail no matter what we did.

If Marinelli has confided in him that we run more Cover 2 this year, holy shit we are fucked.

Moss said for Romo there's nothing steady in Dallas. It's always coaches come and coaches go.

The complete opposite is actually true. Romo has been in Garrett's system and under the tutelage of Garrett and Wilson for what, 8 years now? I WISH coaches for Romo would go.

McNabb, who spent his career playing for Andy Reid, is complaining about our coaching dysfunction?

I'm assuming familiarity confers expertise?

I don't think there was coaching dysfunction in Philly while McNabb was there, unless I'm forgetting something.
