Blogging the Boys had an interesting article on picking the D-Linemen. Below are the the 15 players on the roster going to camp as DL.

Your job, to select the 2 deep DL (starters & backups) that you would take into the season. So you need to pick 4 DE's & 4 DT's, list them, and give a reason for each as to why you selected them.

# Name Pos. Ht. Wt. Age Exp. College
79 Bass, Ben DE 6-5 294 24 3 Texas A&M
98 Crawford, Tyrone DE 6-4 284 24 3 Boise State
71 Gardner, Ben DE 6-4 262 23 R Stanford
90 Lawrence, DeMarcus DE 6-3 251 22 R Boise St.
92 Mincey, Jeremy DE 6-4 265 30 7 Florida
95 Rayford, Caesar DE 6-7 267 28 1 Washington
99 Selvie, George DE 6-4 270 27 5 South Florida
93 Spencer, Anthony DE 6-3 262 30 8 Purdue
56 Wilson, Martez DE 6-4 252 25 4 Illinois
76 Coleman, Davon DT 6-2 297 23 R Arizona State
96 Hayden, Nick DT 6-4 301 28 7 Wisconsin
97 McClain, Terrell DT 6-2 293 25 4 South Florida
69 Melton, Henry DT 6-3 295 27 6 Texas
60 Okoye, Amobi DT 6-2 292 27 7 Louisville
74 Whaley, Chris DT 6-3 272 23 R Texas

Sorry, I didn't feel like filling in every tag to make this into a properly formatted table....

This would be a more participated in exercise if you didn't make it so arduous with requiring explanations and all.

Arduous for a little explanation? I'm not asking for dissertation.

Example:
DT - 3 Tech - Starter: Henry Melton - Pro Bowl potential if knee is healthy

And I asked for it. Doesn't mean you have to give it. Not like I can "require" you to type.....

What is the point of this?

To predict who the top 8 DL will be?

Because I'm pretty sure we're going to keep more than 8 DL so restricting it to 8 seems pointless.

Fine then do more than 8.

In that case I'm going with 10, I think it could be 9, but I definitely think it'll be more than 8 considering our desire for a heavy rotation and the injuries from last year.

I'd go:

Selvie/Crawford/Lawrence/Melton: These are all obvious and require no explanation.
Mincey: Veteran presence and decent against the run. He isn't great but he's an insurance policy.
McClain: Seems to be the star of the offseason so far and our DT's suck so we'll see.
Bass: Has some position flexibility and looked to have some potential before getting hurt last year.
Bishop/Gardner/Coleman: I liked all 3 of them as prospects and everything about them coming out of practices has been positive so far.

Spencer is the 11th, I'd put him on PUP and see where we stand once he's eligible to come back.

It's really impossible to say since it's all dependent on how most of these guys look in TC/preseason but it's July 9th and there isn't anything else to talk about so whatever.

I think they put Whaley on the PUP too. Might go to IR on week 6 if everyone in your rotation is performing. They aren't paying him much and will try to retain his rights and give him a redshirt year to bulk up and get some practice time in.

Yea that'd be a good developmental move.

I think you will see something like this

RE - DeMarcus Lawrence
3 Tech - Henry Melton
NT - Terrell McClain
LE - Selvie

I think Selvie is our most legit LE and could even improve on his 7 sack season last year. He isn't too old to get better. Melton is an easy pick at the 3 technique. He has been a probowler at that position in this defense. RE I picked Lawrence to start although I could see Mincey as a veteran starting the season as a starter but when it is said and done I think most will look at Lawrence as the guy who played more snaps. McClain is kind of the surprise pick at NT. He isn't huge but this defense doesn't want a 340 lb NT, he is an active guy that I think has been talked about as a surprise player already.

Backups are hard to pick at this point. I don't think you can necessarily give the backups positions as someone like Crawford could play anywhere on the D-line and probably will.

Backups:

Davon Coleman
Ken Bishop
Tyrone Crawford
Ben Gardner
Jeremy Mincey

I think this group gives a nice mix of youth and experience along the D-line. It includes NT/3technique/DE prospects to make sure their is depth along the entire D-line.
