Who wore No. 8 better, Young or Aikman?

Posted by Mike Florio on July 1, 2014, 11:23 PM EDT

For most of the PFT Planet polls posted in connection with the Prime Numbers series, we’ve had five or more options, with a goal of identifying the top two or three.

For No. 8, it’s much simpler. Two players. One winner. Steve Young or Troy Aikman.

Cast your vote below for the better of the two to wear the number, and tune in on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. ET to see the results. Along with the rest of the show.

You can vote here.

Young is the 3-1 favorite, it seems.

Ridiculous.

Young was an abject failure until the Walsh system and an already built Super Bowl team picked him up off the scrap pile.

3 Super Bowls to 1? Should be 4 to 0. Who do you think?

If Emmitt Smith didn't go into that game at roughly 60% due to the bad hamstring, we don't come out slinging the ball everywhere which in turn means we don't have the turnover fest that spotted them 21 point in the blink of an eye.

If we don't spot them the 21 points, we probably win that game by 10.

So, yes......it should and could have been 4 Super Bowls.

Good point. It just wasn't our day.

Muddy field caused at least two turnovers as Aikman's foot slipped on the Eric Davis pick on his deep out and Michael Irvin similarly lost his grip on the fumble.

Bad coaching calls (along with injuries to Emmitt, LA, and of course Big E) were a big part of it though.

In the first half Dallas was marching at will and then at 3rd and 10 from the 10 they inexplicably run Emmitt up the gut for no gain when Troy Aikman was red hot. Boniol then missed a chip shot field goal in the mud.

To end the first half Dallas is down just ten points 24-14 and the Cowboys have the ball. They promptly throw three deep passes taking no time off the clock and shank a punt in the mud to give the 49ers great field position with about a minute to play. Then for some bizarre reason they cover Jerry Rice with Larry Brown, which resulted in a TD for the 49ers to go up 31-14.

Switzer refused to play Ron Stone and kept LA out on a sprained ankle which put huge pressure on Aikman.

Take away that TD and add the field goal and Dallas is down just 24-17 (or 24-21, if Aikman converts the idiotic 3rd down call instead of the Emmitt draw) in spite of the 3 turnovers. When they started the second half, they stripped the football and scored an immediate TD to make it a 31-21 game. Instead it would have been 24-24 tied with the 49ers wondering WTF happened to their lead. They might have even had a 27-24 lead.

Instead the 49ers scored on a great drive to go up 38-21 and Dallas came back to make it 38-28 before the infamous non-PI call on Deion Sanders.

Even still Dallas had a makeable 4th and 10 given how red hot Aikman was throwing (he ended up setting an NFC Championship game record 381 yards), but Barry fucking Switzer stepped onto the field and grabbed the referee trying to describe how Deion Sanders was grabbing Irvin and the Cowboys were penalized 15 yards and the final 4th and 25 had almost no chance.

The final last gasp drive had them in long FG range but they needed 10 points. Even still they came close to scoring again despite the 49ers stacked against the pass.

The OC let the team down several times, but Switzer as HC should have nipped that shat in the bud.

If Dallas had beaten SF It would have been a bane for many because Switzer may have won 2 Super Bowls and that would be too much for some. Betcha never considered that. Switzer would have as many rings as Johnson. A real beat down for some.

What's your point? That Switzer was a good NFL coach because he would've won two Super Bowls while on cruise control with Jimmy's team?

My point is exactly what I said. It would chap some asses if Switzer won as many SBs as Johnson.

That was the first Cowboys game I ever sat down and completely watched and I had a bad feeling before it started.

Every time I hear 3 out of 4 Super Bowls I always think "it should have been 3 in a row."

This makes no sense.

Boomer, I guess.
You are missing the point I guess. Folks in these parts hate Switzer and it galls them that he has one Super Bowl Ring. It would be doubly upsetting for him to be able to sport two. It's not a debate about deserving credit.

No, I got your point. It just doesn't make sense.

People don't just arbitrarily like Johnson and hate Switzer. If Switzer had won two, there would still likely be the sentiment that he did it coasting with Jimmy's team. But that fans of a team would be angry with an extra Super Bowl is absurd. I think you may just be a Sooner who loves him some Barry and is kind of annoyed that people who didn't follow his college years closely don't perceive him as the football genius that you do.

If the slightest thing went wrong, Troy was befuddled. And at no point did you go into a game without Emmitt or Michael thinking, 'hey, at least we have Troy!'.

Exactly.

I disliked Switzer because he was a clown who played a part in the team going to shit, but I don't care one bit that he has a Super Bowl ring.

As a matter of fact, I wish he had more because that means the Cowboys as a team would have more.

I hate Jerry Jones with a passion, but seeing or hearing him gloat after a Super Bowl win wouldn't ruin my celebration whatsoever. I'd just be happy that we'd won it all.
