Five questions with: Brandon Carr

July, 2, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- With the players entering the downtime of the offseason, we offer up a Five Questions segment.

Today's subject is Dallas Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr.

Carr signed with the Cowboys in 2012 with a five-year, $50 million deal. He has started every game in his six-year career, having spent the first four years of his career with theKansas City Chiefs.

What is your first football memory?

Carr: I was 6 years old and for Christmas my parents bought me the Dallas Cowboys uniform with the helmet and the little shoulder pads and the jersey. It was Troy Aikman and my cousin, they bought him a Barry Sanders' Detroit Lions one and we used to always go outside and play one on one and do different things then we started hitting, so my first experience of actually tackling was on Christmas day in the snow. We played from about what, 3 in the afternoon all the way until about 8. My brother was the quarterback/referee.

If you could play any other position, what would it be?

Carr: I would want to be a (pause) wide receiver. I like catching the ball. I like when the ball is actually getting thrown to me. I wouldn't want to be a running back. Quarterback, that's OK. I did those years. I'd rather go to the other side of the ball and just switch hats and play and feel how they feel. I can use some of my knowledge on some DBs.

If you were the NFL commissioner for a day, what rule would you change?

Carr: Haha. There's two of them. I would change the targeting rule. Then I would change the pass interference rules. I'd let them play a little bit more. I'd let them be a little bit more physical down the field.

Who is the non-Cowboy you respect the most in the league?

Carr: I've always had a respect for Steve Smith. I played him my rookie year. Just a guy who seems like a pretty cool guy. Takes care of his business on the field, does the same off the field. He's always in the community and doing some kind of charitable things. He has some good movements going on.

If you weren't playing football, what would you be doing?

Carr: This is year seven, hopefully I'd just be getting ready to finish up my residency in the medical field for pediatrician. This is year seven, four years in college, so about 11-12 years. I would just probably being stressed out right now, eyes all red.

Are you even the slightest bit ashamed when you cash your checks?

I really hope we revise our secondary scheme to play to the strengths of our corners. Carr is a good CB. The fact is, our Dline was bad last year and will be even worse this year, but some will continue to blame the CB's

I actually don't think the D-line will be as bad this year. Not saying they will be good but they are a much deeper and younger group. The only impact guy we lost last year was Hatcher. Ware was not good last year.

You are far more optimistic about the D-Line prospects than I am. In my opinion, our only chance to be competitive this year is if the cowboys average 35 points a game on offense. Yes, Ware was not the same guy last year, but who are we replacing him with? After losing Hatcher, Ware, and Lee I really can't see how anyone really believes we will be better up front on defense.

You don't think a rookie can get you 6 freakin sacks at RE?

Like I said the D-line is much deeper this year. Melton is a probowler coming back from an injury that he should have no problem coming back from. Selvie is likely to return at a similar level. McClain, Mincey, Crawford and Spencer provide additional depth that we didn't have last year. I don't think you can underestimate the value of having guys to rotate in on the D-line. I'm comfortable saying the D-line won't be worse this year. I'm just not sure how much "better" they will be.

As far as Sean Lee goes we were only talking about the D-line and secondary. I guess not having Lee for 10 games on defense this year will hurt but I'm hoping someone will be more prepared this year since they will get the starting nod from training camp on instead of sitting behind Lee half the season until he is hurt again.

I think our rook DE will be a horrible bust based on the tape I watched. He was manhandled by college kids. Pro lineman are going to crush him. Spencer is coming off injury and has never been any good with the exception of half a season years ago. Melton may be OK, but who really knows? The rests are just scrubs or guys coming off injury that would not start for anyone else in the league. Just a different take than yours. Trust me, I hope am wrong and you are right.

Then you didn't watch enough tape on Lawrence.

Spencer was always good, he just had one great season. I'm not so sure he comes back this season as anything significant though. If Melton had microfracture surgery your statement on him may make sense but instead we are talking about a 27 year old coming off a pretty standard knee procedure.

We weren't in position to make a signing like Carr. You can afford to sign an expensive corner when you have a young, cheap DL that is getting a ton of pressure that the D isn't capitalizing on. Or, in Seattle's case you can re-sign a top CB to keep your defensive pressure from being compromised by bad DB play.
