Emmitt Smith: Jerry Jones is hard to explain; Jason Garrett is on 'short little leash'

Former Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith faced this pointed question about his former team Tuesday morning on FOX Sports Daybreak radio.

"What is the love affair with Jerry Jones and their coach Jason Garrett? To me, he's got to be on a shoe string, and I don't understand why he's still back there. Can you explain that to us?"

Here is Smith's response: "I don't think anybody can explain anything that Mr. Jones is doing, so I'm not going to even attempt to try to explain it. But it is a different kind of relationship, and it's a relationship that I honestly believe is on a shoe string. Because success is something that the Dallas Cowboys are definitely striving for and definitely need to have this year... And I see that shoe string being a little baby shoe string. That means that it's on a short little leash."

Meanwhile, Smith seemed eager to be more involved with the organization with tasks such as helping young players.

"I'm not saying that (the organization) has totally broken ties with (Cowboys alumni) because we do get calls occasionally," Smith said. "But when it comes down to actually being involved with the organization, to help the players, the younger players and so forth -- that hasn't taken place yet."

I missed the class about tiny little shoe strings. Can someone enlighten me on way he is trying to say?

The cut title of this thread on the main page is disturbing.

Short leash.
Short leash I understand. I wonder why he didn't just say that. Never correlated shoe strings and leashes. I guess I'll go buy a dog shoe string now. And make it a short one.

Everytime this emoticon is used I am compelled to post it two more times in succession.

It would be a perfect fit for a prostrate exam commercial

Throwing your old teammate under the bus isn't the best idea if you want to be hired as a consultant.

Like he's dangling by a thread? I guess?

How did he throw Garrett under the bus? He stated the obvious. It's no secret that Garrett's been on the hot seat the past two seasons.

Also did you see the "Mr. Jones" that Emmitt dropped. He knows who to kiss up to. Besides Garrett won't be around much longer anyway so I he won't be influencing any hirings or firings.

He was a great RB, but he has always been a D-bag. I hate stupid players that whine after their career is over. Leon Lett had no issues getting involved with the team. I understand Emmitt is not very bright, but I assume he would know how to use a phone.

He isn't very bright either, I think part of the reason he isn't invited to help the players as much is because he just isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. I think Irvin still comes in and helps young players.

I think the diamond surrounded trash comment still irks people out at Valley Ranch.

I felt bad for him not being able to handle the TV gig. But watching and listening to his delivery was painful, to say the least.
He must have attended the Jerry Jones school of public speaking. Epic fail.

It was...but honestly, Shannon Sharpe is just as bad, if not worse, and that bozo still has a job.
