Random thoughts: Orton and Spencer

June, 23, 2014

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

With training camp five weeks away, we have some random thoughts on the Dallas Cowboys.

  • The Cowboys don't seem to be winners in the Kyle Orton holdout. The backup quarterback has missed all the offseason workouts, including the mandatory sessions from last week. Orton is thinking of retirement and the team wants him to stay. Coach Jason Garrett compared Orton's situation to that of wide receiver Cole Beasley, who took a few days off from training camp a few years ago pondering his own journey in the NFL. Beasley returned and has gained success in the NFL. Orton doesn't need time away, it seems his mind is made up and he wants to move on. The Cowboys, for financial and depth reasons, want him to stay. But why keep a man on the roster if he doesn't want to be here? The best thing is to cut Orton and move on.

  • Anthony Spencer jogged pretty well during the offseason and while his return from microfracture surgery is late in training camp, he could be the X-factor with the defensive line. George Selvie and DeMarcus Lawrence are the main pass-rushers withBruce Carter expected to take over the main tackling duties at linebacker. However, the Cowboys need someone to cause pressure in the pocket, and the best pass-rusher on this team is Spencer. Yes, he's recovering from a serious injury, but Spencer is motivated to return and prove he can be a productive force again. If Spencer can return, as say a third-down pass-rusher in 2014, the one-year contract he signed might be the best offseason move the team made.

  • I don't believe Tony Romo will have any problems once training camp starts from his back surgery. During the offseason work, Romo was throwing passes with good zip and looked pretty good while jogging around the practice fields. He doesn't look overweight, in fact it wouldn't surprise me if he came in at the 235-pound range this summer. The key to Romo is how he takes these hits and if he's still has that mobility in the pocket. If Romo can still move around like he's done in previous seasons, the Cowboys shouldn't be worried. Romo has always taken hits, that's just life in the NFL, but if he can still move around the pocket over a 16-game season, that will tell you plenty about his recovery.

  • It was interesting you didn't hear much about running back Joseph Randle, the 2013 fourth-round pick from Oklahoma State. The Cowboys are geared for DeMarco Murrayand Lance Dunbar to get more touches this upcoming season. What about Randle? He's supposed to replace Murray if he gets hurt, but the Cowboys signed Ryan Williams, who has a promising career until injuries curtailed it. Randle has some skills, but needs the touches, yet, this Williams signing could be a sign the Cowboys have either moved on from Randle or want to push him to do better.

  • If the season started today, J.J. Wilcox and Barry Church would start at safety and that's the best pairing the team has right now. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli said both are ranging players who make plays on the ball. Marinelli said the pair are good tacklers, Church led the team in tackles last season, and that's key for a defense that was beaten up plenty last season. Matt Johnson and Jeff Heath need to make more plays on the ball in the preseason if they're going to knock Wilcox out of a starting job. It didn't look good to see Johnson, again, doing rehab work because of his hamstring problems. Heath gained valuable experience last season when Wilcox was out with injury. Heath isn't afraid to mix it up, which is good, but his ball skills need work.

I wouldn't cut Orton. I would force him to retire and pay back the 3 mill in signing bonus.

Yes, make Orton retire and get the 3 million back. Hopefully Jerry is still pissed that Orton threw that game ending pick with the playoffs on the line.

How are you going to "make" him retire?

All he has to do is show up and pass a physical.

Ratliff showed anyone who cared to notice how to rip Jerry Jones off.

Then make him pass his physical, at least. Then, if he does, make him sit on the roster and at least earn his money. He shouldn't get to ride off into the sunset with his signing bonus.

Or he they can "make him pass his physical" and sit around in the QB meeting room picking his nose while he earns good money.

He can do whatever he wants. I just hope he does what Jake Plummer had the class to do and just walk away if his heart isn't in it.

That's why I say make him walk. I don't think he even wants to go through another season. Just call his hand, and see what he does. If you pay him the 3 mill, at least make the fucker sit through class and earn it.

And again, how do you make him? How do you call his hand?

All they can do is fine him the max, but if he shows up on the first day of camp and takes the physical and passes, then what? Oh yeah, he can do whatever he wants.

The bastard is holding us hostage.
And it is unnecessary.

This has been going on since they had the end of season exit interviews that perhaps something was up with the guy.

There is no reason players like Witten should be commenting on it.

Well wait, something like $3M reasons.

I guess that is what happens when you pay a guy who allowed Tim Tebow to beat him out.

I would bet the holdup on him retiring is just coming to a agreement on how much he pays back, and to be fair he should only owe back 1.5mil since the restructure was for the teams benefit

Could be.

There is a reason the agent shows up and he doesn't.

You don't earn money by sitting on the roster. I don't know what you can do with a goldbrick except to humiliate him into doing what you want him to do. If I was Garrett or Jones I would unload on him to the media so he would fell compelled to walk away.

Yeah, he will be forced to sit out the season to retire. That's what I'm saying. Force his hand. If he sits the bench, fine. If he retires, even better. We are fine either way. We are 3 mill richer if he retires, and we are better off at QB if he stays. It's a win win, regardless.

If he starts the season on the roster, he has to fulfill his contract with the team, or quit. So, yeah, he has to earn his money if he decides to stay.

We just have a different understanding of earning. He will get paid but he all not earn it. It's more like stealing. :art

Even if he played voluntarily he would just be sitting on the bench waiting for Romo to get hurt... just like he would if they force him to play or retire.

The line they are taking is the right way to go. You keep telling anyone who will listen that you want him on the team and how valuable he is...we questioned Ratliff and his rehab time, etc, and that backfired. By cutting him and losing that 3 mil we'd be doing exactly what we did with Ratliff...at some point you have to draw the line and make them honor the contract. There has to be some legal grounds for teams to recoup that money if the player just flatout does not show up.

Right...and I am not sure if that comes off his base pay or what, but do that too. Orton is playing chicken, just like Ratliff did last year, we just have to stop the trend.
