Cowboys open to roster moves

June, 20, 2014

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

The Dallas Cowboys, despite the moves made in free agency and the NFL draft, have holes.

The loss of middle linebacker Sean Lee to injury has placed Justin Durant into his spot and left some uncertainty at the two other linebacker positions.

Kyle Orton missed all of offseason workouts, and while coach Jason Garrett anticipates the backup quarterback's arrival at training camp, there are questions about that position.

So, is Garrett pleased with the roster as it stands now five weeks away from the start of training camp?

“It is what it is right now,” Garrett said Thursday. “And we’ll continue to make evaluations of individual guys, where they stack up, if they belong on the roster, who else is on the landscape and you’re always trying to do that.”

Garrett created competition for the starter at left guard between Ronald Leary andMackenzy Bernadeau.

It seems Bruce Carter (weakside linebacker) and Kyle Wilber (strong side linebacker) have emerged as starters. J.J. Wilcox has the lead at free safety, and there is good competition along the defensive line.

"I feel good about how guys came in here and worked," Garrett said. "A lot of young guys got a lot of work over the course of the OTAs and minicamp. A lot of veteran players worked hard, felt competition that’s a good thing for our team and we want to continue to do that so if that competition comes from within or comes (outside), it’s our job to make sure we put the most competitive situation available out there on our roster and we’ll continue to do that.”

Wilber could give the defense a physical player. I'm really rooting for him.
