Archer: Matt Johnson hopes this is the year

You must create competition in the NFL or you stagnate.

Jerry is a glass-half-full guy every player, every situation. If he sees a chance at starter potential in a guy, he assumes the best and moves on to the next position of need.

Jones sees the same player they evaluated before the 2012 draft and refuses to factor that the guy hasn't remained healthy enough to play a single down in two full years.
Wasn't that what the drafting of Wilcox last year intended to do? With the needs on the OL, DL and LB/WR depth; you would have preferred drafting another safety?

You have 3 safeties competing for one starting spot (Johnson, Wilcox, Heath). Isn't that what you were just advocating?

:lol

The fact that you even named Heath makes me not take this post seriously. If he is serious competition to a starter on your team, then you have no real starter on your team.

Never said he was serious competition. But he is getting reps and competing for the spot. Anything that takes reps away from a player is a threat. Coaches at this point in the off season are more than willing to pull you for a mistake and give another player some reps. The worry is that they don't make a mistake and keep taking your reps.

Isn't that the fear you want to bring out the best in a guy and make him focus?

If you read your post closely, you'll see what Cowboysrock is getting at. The mere fact that Matt Johnson and Heath are EVEN ON THE FIELD acting like they are the "answer" at S tells you what a bunch of dumbasses we have running this team.

The only one who should have even been looked at would be Wilcox- and seeing what we saw of him, any competent GM in the draft room would have said....we need to grab another S in case Wilcox bombs like he did last year. Heath and fucking Matt "Ghost" Johnson shouldn't even be on the radar as potential answers at the spot.

That would be true if you could stock All-Pro or even Pro Bowl level talent to compete at every position. But that just isn't realistic.

Would you rather have taken a safety in the first round? You still needed a G and you got one that could take over at RT next year so that you can let Free go to free agency. You got value in that pick.

You could have taken one in the 2nd, but 4 had already been taken. You are getting down the list of "top talent" and if you take one here, you still haven't addressed the DL that you KNOW is a problem.

Want to trade Hitchens for a safety considering what happened to Lee?

I'm not saying that Johnson and Heath are they "answer," just that it's not as easy as you paint it to have top talent at every position.

This is a load of crap. Nobody is asking for All-Pro or even Bro Bowl level talent there, much less at every position. All anybody is wanting is NFL caliber talent to man the safety position. And all three candidates are question marks, with the first two looking already to not have it. Heath has shown beyond a doubt he's not it. Nobody has any idea if Johnson is, and time is quickly running out on him and his tender hammies. Wilcox might make it. At least he has a little bit of a history behind him that shows he's capable. Time will tell if that will translate to the NFL field.

So the only question of wanting "top talent" is one you raise. All anybody else is looking for is a modicum of competence.

Ah. The old "you can't have steak on every plate" argument.

It's not just the draft that you have available to you. Major Wright could have come in and competed as a veteran with experience in the system playing for Marinelli. He ended up signing for one year 795k with Tampa.

This is the hidden costs for Trading away two picks for Claiborne and Demarcus Lawrence.

Maybe we should've tried Marcellus Bennett, fasano and Escobar at safety.

Also a good point. We've been throwing away premium picks at an insane rate.

You completely miss the point by focusing on one phrase. It's the old internet message board tactic of "taking your words out of context one phrase at a time."

Guess you completely missed the OTHER phrase where I said, "just that it's not as easy as you paint it to have top talent at every position."

Sacrifices have to be made to shore up backup LB (boy that looks good now), or DL (did we have any before), or 3rd WR (was listed by many as a need).

And let's not forget that they brought in a safety. Granted he was on UDFA, but I watch a lot of Big 12 games and he played pretty well. It may be that he shows something and makes Johnson a first round cut. EVERY team mines the UDFAs and what I have seen is that the wide variety of players brought in allow them to let go so of the same incompetence that you say should be gone.

There were several veterans that were available cheap that would have served as better insurance than draft busts and UDFAs.
