Because he'll have options outside of Dallas. Those are reserved for players that have degenerative conditions that nobody will touch...like our savior DE Anthony Spencer.
But isn't that he same reason some wouldn't sign him in the first place because he should be dropped and find some replacement? Make him the offer to take it or leave it and you may get the same result or he could sign. What's lost in the approach?

He's not Forte or Lynch. Nor does he have a coach who actually can feature him making him worth the second contract. We might as well have minimum wage schlubs at RB as long as Garrett is around.
No but he had 1100 yards and 9 TD's last year on barely 200 carries, if he has a similar year while staying healthy, I'd want to re-sign him. There is a very real chance that Garrett isn't even here next year to begin with.

It all rolls together.

But I can honestly say I don't think Murray is a special player.

Lynch is a bulldozer. Forte is one of the finest receiving backs in a while.

So...Murray's special skill is what? I like the guy and wish he would get more chances, but I just think he is definitely a tier below what I consider elite backs worth paying.

If that's the best you want to offer, be my guest. I'm just telling you there is a 0% chance he signs if he has other options.

Lots of players take performance clauses. Just depends on the amount of the performance clause compared to the rest of the contract. Murray won't take a purely performance based contract but I can also promise you that whatever contract he signs will have some performance based clauses in it.
Lots of players take incentive bonuses to go with their already nice base salary. That's not what we're talking about.

But you say you are letting him walk anyway. Why not try?

Then don't pay him elite money. Give him an injury and incentives performance objective that if he attains it it will be elite pay for elite performance. Just cover yourself as an owner.

I never said don't try. I said don't expect him to take it. Someone will offer him a decent deal that's better than a $2-3M plus incentive deal.

Do you think the Cowboys should offer a better deal?

If he shows up this season like he did last year and is able to play at least 13 games, Id give him around $5M. But I'm not breaking the bank. Part of the reason I say that is because we didn't address the position this last draft.

Now if Williams shows what he's capable of, Murray can walk without an offer.

So we are down to wait and see. Who would have thought it? :art

Problem is the Cowboys rarely practice the 'Wait and see' technique.

So don't be shocked if Murray is signing his extension before Thanksgiving.

Probably so and I have no problem with that if the contract has a framework that protects the organization in the event of an injury that prevents him from playing. Again I would try for that approach with every contract. Guaranteed money is as abhorrent to me as the golden parachute is in the business world.

Since we drafted Randle, optimally he will develop and we don't have to splurge to resign a non-core player like Murray. Let him go like Julius and Felix.

Unless, of course, Randle was drafted for special teams.
