It will be interesting to see how the Cowboys approach DeMarco Murray now that they've been burned by Sean Lee.

Murray has elevated his game to where he's now in the discussion of top 10 RBs in the game. But like Lee, he has a hard time staying on the field.

Murray's no idiot. He knows RBs have a short shelf life and this will likely be his one and only big contract in the NFL. So don't look for him to take a discount of any sort to remain in Dallas. He will follow the money.

History suggests that Jerry and Stephen will show Murray the money. I honestly can't remember the last time they allowed a productive young player to leave via FA.

I like Murray but he's not worth the risk. The Cowboys have been burned too many times by these injury prone players. That's the approach the Cowboys should take and I'm wondering if this recent Lee injury affects their thinking when they're sitting at the negotiating table with Murray's agent.

Food for thought.

If they don't learn with this latest Lee injury, then they never will.

If Murray plays all 16 games, then I'd consider giving him a deal. I really like the player and I love his attitude and demeanor.

But if he misses another 3 or 4 games as usual, you have to let him walk.

The one I want to see is Dez. With his back situation, I think the drafting of Street was a wise move.

Seeing what RBs got in FA this offseason, I'm offering him a deal similar or a little better than those. I'm guessing he's going to want money closer to the higher end guys and that's when I let him walk.

Of course, if Randle is the plan to take over, I'm offering Murray $100M to stay.

At least we don't run the ball enough so his chances of getting hurt are less in Dallas. He has that going for him.

The problem with RB's is they usually burn out by the age of 29. I doubt he will be willing to sign a 3 year contract but I wouldn't be comfortable going much longer. Also good luck on the free agent market, RBs are getting pennies on the dollar there as well.

If he stays healthy this year I'd be happy to give him a 4 year deal for around 20-25 million, but I'd also have no problem letting him walk, especially if Dunbar or Ryan Williams emerge a bit this year. Franchising him wouldn't be a bad idea either.

If you look at the top backs in the league none of them make more than around 6-7 million per year except for Peterson, so Murray can basically go fuck himself if he asks for that money considering he isn't on that level and the injury issues.

I don't know that I would let him walk but I would definitely have a performance clause in the contract. I think that should be standardized in every contract.

Murray is a back. No RB should get a second contract unless they are at an Adrian Peterson level. Lee's thing is irrelevant to Murray's situation.

I bet you $100 we re-sign him.

I am not going to bet on Jerry's idiocy not manifesting itself. No thanks.
Smart man. Or, a beaten down Cowboys fan. One of those two, definitely.

You wouldn't re-sign Matt Forte or Marshawn Lynch to a 2nd contract?

And I'm fully aware of Lynch's career path, I'm saying someone in their mid-20's playing at his level.

He's not Forte or Lynch. Nor does he have a coach who actually can feature him making him worth the second contract. We might as well have minimum wage schlubs at RB as long as Garrett is around.

Murray hasn't been used that much. I would sign him to a three year deal for 10 M. With a performance clause.

Because he'll have options outside of Dallas. Those are reserved for players that have degenerative conditions that nobody will touch...like our savior DE Anthony Spencer.
Lots of players take performance clauses. Just depends on the amount of the performance clause compared to the rest of the contract. Murray won't take a purely performance based contract but I can also promise you that whatever contract he signs will have some performance based clauses in it.
