Dez: 'I'm in best shape I've ever been'

May, 14, 2014
By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

Dez Bryant's physique that looks like it was carved out of a mountain, to borrow a phrase from Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, is being pushed to its limits this offseason.

“I am in the best shape that I’ve ever been,” Bryant said.

Bryant made that proclamation as he drove from Oklahoma City, where he watched a classic Game 5 of the Clippers-Thunder playoff series, to Valley Ranch for a workout. The Cowboys’ Pro Bowl receiver has done some traveling this offseason, making trips to New York and Los Angeles, but never cut corners on his workout program.

“Trust me, I’ve been working hard,” Bryant said. “I’ve been working six days out of the week. Today is my off day, but I’m going to the facility right now. That’s all I’ve been doing. This year is special.”

Bryant, who set career highs with 93 catches and 13 touchdowns last season while gaining 1,233 yards, believes he’s on the verge of a big season. That wouldn’t surprise anyone.

But Bryant does make a bold prediction that linebacker Orie Lemon, his workout partner, will make an impact for the Cowboys this season. Lemon, who played with Bryant at Oklahoma State, has been fighting for a roster spot since the Cowboys signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2011. He has spent time on the practice squads of the Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals and played eight games for the Cowboys over the past two seasons, getting credited for five tackles.

“He’s going to be a real sleeper,” Bryant said. “He’s been working so hard. He’s going to come out of nowhere and surprise a lot of people.”

Oh crap. Fingers crossed -- usually when players say that it's the Kiss of Death.

He's also pimping his buddy Orie Lemon. I forgot that guy was even still on the team.

Orie will come in, take everyone by surprise, and win the starting SLB job.

We'll all have a Lemon Party!!

Good for him. Teammates appreciate that sort of thing.

You know, this kind of stuff is a continuation of his maturation from last year. Strong off season, pimping up team mates all lead me to believe he has completely turned the corner. I hope he truly shows the complete talent we all wish him to be this year even more so than last.

Dez will have his best year yet. With Street going over the middle and Terrance stretching the field, we should easily be a top 3 offense this year

Welcome...get an avatar soonest or one will be assigned to you. If you like balls in your face, then you may like the avatar we'll give you...so it's your call.

Dez certainly looks poised for a good year, but it is more contingent on Romo being healthy that of Street really doing anything. I like the player, but lets see what he does before he becomes a key to Dez's success.

Saying we'll easily be a top 3 offense might be a tad homerific.

Should and Will are two different things... With this O-line and the talent Dallas has at receiver it shouldn't be that far fetched. Of course Garrett and Romo has a different kind of special about them sometimes.

I guess I'm just not ready to say we have a top WR unit yet. Sure, Dez is an allpro talent. But is Williams ready to take the next step and be a solid #2? Will Beasley or Harris flourish as the #3? Can Street step in and contribute? People are talking like we've already seen it. As far as I can remember, Dez is the only one that's done it already.

Does Free take a step back again? Does Fred continue to develop? Does Leary continue to develop, or continue the slide he was on the last few games. Martin has the pedigree, but does he hit the ground running?

Does Murray remain healthy, and if he does, do we do more than just the courtesy rushing attempt every once and awhile?

Also, the talk of Romo not being the same anymore, or even being able to finish the season has been pretty strong around here. Not really conducive to a top three offense if either of those are even close to being true.

There are a lot of questions to be answered before we can say we should easily be a top 3 offense.
