Cowboys believe J.J. Wilcox will blossom

May, 13, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Everybody believes one of the Dallas Cowboys' most pressing needs is safety. Everybody except the Cowboys.

The Cowboys will rely on second-year safety J.J. Wilcox to add depth to the position in 2014.The Cowboys liked Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Calvin Pryor, the top-rated safeties in the draft, but did not love either, especially when compared to offensive tackle Zack Martin, whom they took with the 16th pick in the first round. The Cowboys could have had Dix or Pryor at No. 16 but stuck with their board.

They loved Jimmie Ward, but in the second round. The San Francisco 49ers took Ward with the 30th pick in the first round.

When they looked at the rest of the board, they saw safeties who were comparable to what they already had on the roster, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones.

The Cowboys are putting their belief in last year’s third-round pick, J.J. Wilcox. He had 38 tackles in 2013. He started five games and missed three with a knee injury.

But it was the loss of his mother, Marshell Wilcox, in training camp that affected Wilcox’s performance the most. The Cowboys were set to name him the starter in training camp on the day his mother died, according to Jones. He missed two weeks to be with his family to grieve. He eventually was named the starter in Week 3.

“That can get a lot of people off track when you have that type of emotional tragedy like that,” Jones said. “It took a toll on him, and we started seeing signs of what we’d seen in camp towards the end of the year. But I think, obviously, that was a tough deal he was going through, and we have a lot of confidence we’re going to see the J.J. we saw in training camp.”

Wilcox was mostly a running back at Georgia Southern, playing safety only his senior season. The Dallas coaches, however, saw him make a quick transition to the position and were primed to rely on him as a rookie. After hurting his knee, Wilcox could not unseat Jeff Heath as the starter opposite Barry Church, but saw his playing time increase down the stretch.

The Cowboys drafted Baylor safety Ahmad Dixon in the seventh round. They also have Matt Johnson and Jakar Hamilton at the position. Johnson still intrigues because the 2012 fourth-round pick has yet to stay healthy enough to play in a game.

“Matt Johnson is the great unknown,” Jones said. “We’ll see. Maybe he’ll stay healthy and we’ll get to really take a long look at him.”

:lol

The Matt Johnson doglike devotion continues.

I would love nothing more than to see the kid stay 100% healthy.

But I have to admit, I would get a sick pleasure out of having him suck complete ass to repay the team for their faith in the guy.

It is unlike anything I have ever seen.

It is almost like what Justin Beriault could have done had he played his blackmail options a little bit better.

Don't forget, Johnson has stretched across two defensive staffs and still has support from the top of the organization.

I can't believe Johnson will ever be healthy. He will always get beat up playing with the big boys. This small school secondary bullshit just isn't meant to be.

Brandon Carr and his $10 mil paycheck laughs at this.

The sad thing is even if he did somehow manage to stay healthy who knows if he is even any good. He was considered a big reach in the fourth round at the time. I'm not sure that I have any evidence that a healthy Johnson is even worth a crap.

This is one of our biggest problems. We way overvalue our players.

Who knows if Wilcox will work out. Or Johnson or Crawford for that matter. Maybe they will, maybe not.

But year after year we continue to rely on guys like this instead of bringing in legit competition in case they dont pan out.

They draft these guys or sign these guys and fall in love with them without first knowing if they can play in the NFL.

I have no problem giving a guy like Wilcox a shot. But where is the backup plan? Smart teans know that not every player they have high hopes for works out.

Stephen Jones: Our safeties are better than media critics say

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 14, 2014, 12:30 PM EDT

The Cowboys had a need at safety heading into the NFL draft, but they didn’t address that need until the seventh round. Cowboys V.P. Stephen Jones says the reason for that is simple: The Cowboys don’t believe safety is as much a need as everyone says.

“We obviously feel a little bit better about our safeties than maybe some of our critics in the media,” Jones said on a conference call with season ticket holders.

Jones said a depth chart featuring 2013 third-round pick J.J. Wilcox and 2012 fourth-round pick Matt Johnson along with veteran Barry Church is better than people realize.

“I’d start with J.J. Wilcox,” Jones said. “He was really having a tremendous training camp and he had a real tragedy in his life when he lost his mother. We were naming him the starter that day, and then he had to leave camp, rightfully so, to be with his family. . . . We think J.J., working with him in the offseason, has it all back together again and we think he’s going to seize the opportunity.”

“Matt Johnson has real injuries, but they’re more unfortunate than chronic,” Jones continued. “This is probably the year for him to really have it all come together. . . . Church is the leader of that group and we have young guys in [Jakar Hamilton] and some guys like that we think can step up for us.”

Jones also said seventh-round safety Ahmad Dixon was a great value.

“We were also really pleased with Ahmad Dixon,” he said. “He’s almost a cinch to make our team because our special teams coach, Rich Bisaccia, was so fired up about him.”

So no matter what the media say, Jones feels just fine about his safeties.

That's actually probably true, though not for the reason Jones thinks. He's just an insufferable homer like his dad.

But really, the defensive backs will get better as the DL improves. So they aren't really as bad as they looked last year.

I think Marinelli wants 2 big hitters back there...just not feasible in the game now. You need a true CF back there...like Met great, Juan Lagares.

Our corners may look better but I doubt our safeties. D-lineman won't help our safeties know how to play a ball once it is in the air and they won't help the safeties take better angles to tackles. The horrible play of guys like Jeff Heath was not a product of lack of pressure.

No, but they'll be put into compromising positions a lot less.

Agreed.

That's why when I predicted Johnson's starting pro bowl gig, I didn't include the superbowl MVP in with it.

Let's be realistic, I always say.

And then when they show even the slightest hint of actually playing well Jones makes sure they are set for life.

I think the bigger problem is that we don't see if the guys can compete with the starters. Jerry mandates that we win now. So it is hard to let a rookie actually complete with a vet. Maybe the injuries last year gives Garrett some ammo to go to Jerry and say, "see, some of our young guys can play."

The win now attitude is not something that is easy to overcome when you are trying to re-build.
