I lost my mom 14 years ago and it still pains me at times. I can totally understand it affecting him for the season. I still dont really celebrate Mothers Day so its easy for me to see how that could affect him. Hopefully you have several years before you have to go through that.
I'm not saying he isn't still grieving and that it can't have long lasting effects, what I'm saying is I'm questioning that it has some debilitating effect on him that he can't function and do his job for that length of time. People start to cope rather quickly and should be back to functioning normally in a few months despite still having symptoms to a much lesser extent.

I think the problem is that we are all so used to bullshit excuses with this organization that even if this is a legit reason it makes it very hard for us to trust that it's the case. Especially when the Cowboys as an organization are still trying to spin Jeff Heath off as a legit NFL safety prospect.

That's a fair assessment, they have done the sales pitch so many times I automatically assume it's snake oil pretty much as soon as they start speaking

If this is his first family loss I might understand it but if the emotion continues into this season he isn't stable enough to deal with pressures. You learn that life goes on when you lose parents and siblings not to mention close friends.

That is absolutely part of it. Don't feed me bullshit for years on shitty players and then expect me to believe you when making excuses for a high draft picks poor play.

I'm not sure about the last part if it was unexpected. I don't know if that was the case with Wilcox but suspect that it was since we never heard anything about it. I lost both of my parents early in my life unexpectedly. My mom was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease and passed away less than a year after the diagnosis and my dad to emphasymia (complicated but was unexpected at the time) a few years later. In both cases I know I was not normal for awhile and really didn't have time to grasp what had happened. Wilcox case happened in July/August. I can see where it could affect him the season quite easily. Whether it be due to lost time in training camp and not fully knowing the system or just having a hard time with life.

Michael Sam: “From last season alone, I should’ve been in the first three rounds. Every team that passed me, I was thinking how I’m going to sack their quarterback.”
I bet you were Sam, I bet you were.

It's amazing how much you know about how individual people cope with grief.
