IRVING — Could Miles Austin return to the Cowboys? Don’t rule out the possibility, head coach Jason Garrett and executive vice president Stephen Jones said Saturday.
Garrett and Jones said they were open to the idea of re-signing Austin after they cut him in March and drafted Pittsburgh receiver Devin Street in the fifth round this weekend.
“We love Miles Austin,” Garrett said. “We really do….Miles has been a really good player for us and the economics of his situation really factored into the decision we made with him coupled with his injuries.”
Asked if he was surprised Austin hadn’t been signed by any other team, Jones said, “Yes and no.”
Jones added, “Player acquisition is 365 days a year. It never stops.”
Austin was designated as a post-June 1 cut, a move that saved $5.5 million against the cap this season. He had become too expensive for the Cowboys after making only 24 catches for 244 yards and no touchdowns in 11 games last season. But it appears the door has been kept open for a possible return.
