ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. joined KESN-FM on Tuesday. Here are some highlights from the interview.

On what defensive players the Cowboys could bring in that could contribute.

“If you think about an outside linebacker, Ryan Shazier from Ohio State would fit what they want to do. You think about Aaron Donald, the defensive tackle, but he’ll be long gone. There’s no other defensive tackle to consider at that point. I don’t think Anthony Barr is a down defensive end. Some people think he’s the next Peter Boulware. He’s got to get tougher, more intensity and he’s got to get better technique. If you want to reach a little bit and hope you can coach him up and play him at defensive end, maybe. But I think that’s too early. Then you look at safety. Will Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Alabama, or Calvin Pryor be there? I think Calvin Pryor could. He would be a nice pick. He would be an impactful player in that secondary right away.”

On if there’s any chance Aaron Donald falls to the Cowboys:

“I’ll say no chance. Zero percent chance Aaron Donald is there. … I don’t see any way. He’s the third best defensive player in this draft by far, and that’s behind Clowney and Mack who both are in line to be the No. 1 pick. Do the math. A defensive tackle in today’s NFL who dominated the regular season, dominated the Senior Bowl practices, dominated the combine, did everything perfect, how is he going to drop down to 16?”

On if Florida State’s Timmy Jernigan would be a fit for the Cowboys:

“I think he could be. When I went and looked at Jernigan, — I was with a former GM when we looked at these guys — to me, he’s not an ideal fit for any scheme. He’s not going to be able to hold the fort against the run on a consistent basis. He’s not going to be a pass rusher. He’s not the kind of guy that you would say fits everything for one side or the other. It doesn’t really matter. To me he’s a guy that basically can be in the rotation. He can certainly be a solid player. He can play the run fairly well. Every once in a while he’ll give you a play behind the line of scrimmage, but he’s not a stand out.”

Rotational guy? Would be fine in Dallas if the rest of the rotation (minus Melton) wasn't a bucket of turds.

Jernigan is very good against the run and can push the pocket a bit. He isn't a good enough pass-rusher to be a 3 technique but I think he'd be a good enough 1 considering how strong he is against the run, and he'd be able to provide a bit of pass rush as well.

Looks like our options are reaching for defense in the 1st, going offense with Zach Martin or Beckham, or trading down. As much as we need DL you have to hit with your first round pick even if it means taking someone at your 3rd/4th need area. If Donald's gone I'd go Martin or Beckham.

I think he is a perfect fit for the one technique in this defense. In our defense the one technique is you're traditional giant run stuff with no pass rush ability. You still need a NT that can get up field and make plays. If Jernigan is around in the second when we are up I think he would be a tremendous pick. If we had a D-line next year of Spencer/Selvie, Jernigan, Melton and Barr I would call that a big win.

Nah, just the offseason combined with a new group taking over our dept. at work late last year. Went from steady workload with time to multi-task/internet surf to barely being able to squeeze in a lunch break most days. But did just move into a new role that should be a little less hectic.
Anyway, with the draft here I thought it was a good time to drop in.
