McCarron thinks he could go as high as No. 16

Posted by Mike Florio on April 29, 2014, 1:18 PM EDT

Lost between the Manziels and the Bortleses and the Mettenbergers and Murrays and forgotten amid the perceived free fall of Teddy Bridgewater is Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron.

It’s unclear where McCarron will be taken; he reportedly skipped the Senior Bowl because McCarron believed he already was poised to be a top-20 pick. While McCarron explained that he passed on the Senior Bowl due to injury, he apparently thinks he could end up in the top 20, after all what other prospect already has a reality tv show.

While gliding through the ESPN car wash on Monday, McCarron made clear his belief that he won’t be sliding out of round one.

He said that, of his pre-draft visits, “pretty much everyone so far” said he has a first-round grade.

“They felt like I could go anywhere from 16-35,” McCarron said, via AL.com. “I believe that, too. At the same time, I don’t have my hopes set on anything. Whatever happens, happens. It’s a blessing for me to even be in this situation.”

If McCarron goes that high (and the Cowboys hold the 16th pick), it will defy the projections of pretty much everyone who is trying to project who will be taken in the first 35 picks. Still, McCarron realizes that it’s impossible to know what any given team will do with any given pick.

“It’s not like the G.M.s are calling these guys and telling them, ‘Hey, we’re going to draft this guy at this number so go ahead and put that out there,’” McCarron said. “One thing I’ve learned about this whole process, it’s nothing but a big secret.

“A lot of times teams will bring in a guy just to bluff another team and make it seem like toward the media that they like this guy and really they have no interest at all in drafting him.”

He’s right, but if McCarron were destined to be among the first 35 players taken, there would be far more buzz about him than there currently is.

Ultimately, his stock will hinge on how many teams take quarterbacks. If one or more runs happen in the first round, his name will move higher on the stack for teams looking to fill needs that have yet to be addressed.

I would like to request a new site banner with McCarron on it just in case he's drafted. We can put it up that evening.

And then trade up out of second for Ealy. That just might do it.

Is that why you don't like him?
Pretty much. I think I have documented the reasons.

I also don't think he is that talented as a prospect. Instead of him being grounded like most big school QBs who have real limitations over the years, he's out there acting like he's hot shit.

There is not one quality he has that is tangible that makes him a good pro prospect. His arm is not top shelf. He is not mobile. He can't handle a rush. But he has publicly stated he feels he is elite.

My thing is simple...there are a lot of QBs who could have played on the teams Saban assembled and been successful. If he was humble like Brady and let the process carry itself out, I'd get it. He's not.

He's a douche. Big time.

I was like you a while ago. He seemed kind of like an unheralded guy you could take in the fifth. Had some intangibles that might be interesting. But the more exposure he has received as the college season progressed, the more of his douche baggery became evident.

What's funny, is he is the reverse of Manziel. I disliked Manziel, but now I respect his game a little more. And frankly, he's handled the process better.

Maybe so. I am not familar with his "douchness" aspects. Where I am coming from is he has had 5 years with a solid football program. He seems to have a good reaction to reading defensive systems if you can believe Gruden. He has good size and even though he doesn't have a cannon arm, he is accurate and has adequate arm strength. I think he is pretty intelligent as well.

Here's a start.

I won't even go into his bitchy stupid mother getting on Twitter jumping on Winston after he won a NC when he couldn't with a stacked team.

Or his bailing on the Senior Bowl because he said he had "nothing to prove".

Or him skipping on a workout with the Titans because he was sick saying "things happen".

If this were Manziel, it would carry a different connotation.

His tweet about the Grammy performances being "demonic" was just odd. Tasteless? Inappropriate? Vulgar? OK, fine. Demonic? GTFO with that crazy ass bullshit.

That puts his talent into perspective for me. I don't follow the draft prospects much at all these days so an NFL comp is helpful. If Dallas were to draft him I would deal with the fact that I don't care for his personality if he can play. If he projects as a poor man's Andy Dalton though...pass.

He has way more ability than Dalton. Not even a close comparison. If he is there is 3rd, I take him. I tend to be conservative when it comes to QB's, and sometimes they slip; if he does and is there in 3rd, I take him. He is good.

Dalton has had 3 decent to good years. We'll see if McCarron has one.

I can see the comparison to Dalton, who himself is a poor man's Ryan. They're all game manager qbs with McCarron at the bottom talent wise

If we drafted McCarron at #16, i would legitimately stop being a dallas cowboys fan. there couldn't be a dumber pick in the first round for us.

McCarron will not be drafted in the first round by anyone IMO but I think he could go in the second round even though he should probably go no sooner than the third.

We were also saying the same about Christian Ponder, EJ Manuel and Tim Tebow at this point before the draft. Crazy things happen when teams are desperate for QBs.
