Former NFL wide receiver and current ESPN analyst Keyshawn Johnson was arrested at his California home early Monday on a misdemeanor spousal battery charge.

No other details were available, pending an investigation, a Los Angeles County sheriff's officer said.

TMZ reported Johnson smashed his girlfriend's phone, causing a gash to her hand.

Johnson, 41, was released on $20,000 bond. ESPN is looking into the incident, a spokesman said.

Johnson has worked as an analyst at ESPN since 2007 and appears on "NFL Countdown" on Sundays and Mondays.

Why spousal battery? It was a girlfriend.

They live together therefore they are common law married. Besides "Girlfriend Battery" doesn't roll off the tongue like "Spousal Battery."

I am not familiar with what constitutes common law marriage in California but in several states in addition to living together it takes a pronouncement by the parties to say they are the husband or wife of the other. Just sharing a common household isn't enough to constitute a legal common law marriage. Even a statement by the parties that the mate is their spouse will suffice.

This seemed like a good idea at the time.

That's correct...and I believe SC was 1 of the last states to enforce the simple act of "living together" equals common law marriage. Now you have to actually state you are husband and wife and file taxes together to claim common law.

"Spousal Battery" is probably a charge that started out as being strictly between people who were married and got expanded to include other domestic violence without changing the name of the offense.

Well that was stupid, but I enjoyed watching him play. He was like a really good receiving TE out there. He was slow as shit but he just shielded the ball with his body and went and got it.

He talked selfish but played selflessly.

Why was that stupid play a staple? Some teams can go years without running one.
