Cowboys Twitter mailbag, Part 1
April, 18, 2014
By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com
IRVING, Texas -- Part 1 of the Dallas Cowboys' Twitter mailbag is ready.
In it we discuss:
What I would do with the 16th pick in the draft if I was the general manager.
What about a quarterback in the second round?
What about Orlando Scandrick and Morris Claiborne?
What about the salary-cap implications of letting Kyle Orton go?
Away we go:

@toddarcher #cowboysmail What is your move at 16 on Draft day? BPA or Trade Up/Out? Arch the GM WWYD?

@toddarcher: This is a scary thought, me running the show. But OK, I’ll play along. Here’s what I would do: If Aaron Donald is there, he’s my guy. If Donald is gone, but Anthony Barr is there, I take Barr. If no defensive linemen I believe is worthy of the No. 16 pick is available, then I hope like heck somebody wants to trade up. If nobody does, then I’m taking Zack Martin and I’ll be as happy with that pick as the Cowboys were last year when they got Travis Frederick. Seeing Taylor Lewan available at No. 16 in a few mocks is somewhat surprising and might make me re-think the Martin pick. The Cowboys must be prepared to stick at No. 16 and make a selection.

Cowboys pick in 2nd rd. Top rated player on board is a QB. Trade down, reach or take the QB? #cowboysmail

@toddarcher: Another what-if scenario for me. I guess I would need to know how much of a difference in the grade between the quarterback and the best defensive player is to really know what to do. If it is a huge difference, I’d take the quarterback. I’d trust my board in that scenario. If there is not a huge difference, I might pass and go with the next best player at a position of need. I know we all say you can’t draft need -- and I’m sure I said that at one point -- but I don’t think you can just ignore need either. There is a lot of gray when it comes to the draft and sometimes you have to operate in the gray. But again, if the grades between players are vastly different, then I’d go with the quarterback. Would the Cowboys do this? I don’t really think they would. I think they would pass.

@toddarcher #cowboysmail who is the starter going into camp. Mo or Scandrick?

@toddarcher: It has to be Orlando Scandrick. Last year Jason Garrett showed he was willing to bench guys and that led to Scandrick taking over for Morris Claiborne, Ernie Sims taking over for Bruce Carter and Brian Waters taking over for Mackenzy Bernadeau. Scandrick had his best season and deserves to remain with the starters. If he loses the job in the offseason or training camp, it has to be because Claiborne just took it away. That would be the best scenario for the Cowboys because it would mean Claiborne has finally tapped into his potential. But Claiborne has to earn it. It just can’t be given to him.

@toddarcher say weeden plays well, and they draft a qb,only want to keep 3 qbs, what is the cap ramifications if they cut orton? #cowboysmail

@toddarcher: I’m assuming this scenario comes up in the middle of the preseason games and not, say, during the organized team activities. So let’s go with the assumption. It would be considered a post-June 1 cut, so the Cowboys would save $3.25 million against the cap in 2014, but Orton would count $2.254 million against the cap in 2015. Since the final two years of Orton’s deal void after this season, he is set to count $2.254 million against the cap next year anyway. The same numbers would hold true if the Cowboys were able to trade Orton. If the Cowboys cut Orton before June 1, they would save about $900,000. But I’ll throw this out there: I’m still not convinced Orton wants to play in 2014, despite what came out of the owners meetings. Let’s see if he shows up to the offseason program next week.

@toddarcher why hasn't the Cowboys done anymore on free agency there's a lot of talent left out there on defense??

@toddarcher: I don’t know that there is a lot of talent left out there in free agency right now. Perhaps the best defender available is Anthony Spencer, and the Cowboys know him better than anybody. They know exactly where he is in his rehab from microfracture surgery. I can see Spencer coming back, but I don’t know where else the Cowboys look for help. They might sign a player before the draft, but I expect them to first go through their picks on May 8-10 and then fill the final holes on the roster. If players are available today, then most likely they will be available after the draft. But I don’t know that they would be true difference-makers at this point.
