This makes no sense.

If we need an NT, we need an NT. Signing Melton has no bearing on that.
I think it makes complete sense. The 1 tech DT is what makes this defense go. And if a worthy one was available, should have been our first priority in the draft. But since we have now acquired one, we can broaden our choices a bit.

This is exactly correct except I think you mean three technique. It's something you absolutely must have in this defense and in my opinion it's not that easy of a position to fill.

Whoops, yeah. My mistake. The pressure guy, not the plugger is what I meant. The three.

Well, yes, but that's not what was said. Obviously the 1 Tech is the priority, but what if Donald wasn't there?

What if Nix was the only worthy DT on the board? We still need a 3 Tech, he should have been a consideration as well.

edit: Yeah, i got the 1 and 3 backwards too.

:lol

As I was reading this I was preparing to correct you and then saw the edit at the end. It's not that Nix would have ever been a bad pick, it's just hard to think about that type of player when you still have a glaring need at the 3 technique spot. Of course once you have a three technique that is a potential probowler, suddenly it doesn't seem as bad to want to draft a Nix type player.

It's nice to say you're just going to draft BPA and the need at the three technique spot shouldn't trump a need at the one technique spot when it comes to the draft but it just isn't realistic. Teams move up and down the draft to try and match both need and BPA. That's exactly what Dallas will attempt to do when draft day rolls around. One position is clearly far more important to this defense then the other.

We needed one before, we need one now. If Nix is a good pick after we signed Melton, he was a good pick before we signed Melton, too, because he's filling a completely different hole.

That being said, I agree it'd be a pick I'd get behind. Ideally, if we could trade down and get another pick, too, that'd be even better.

Then you could do something like:

Nix in the first (trade down)
DE in the 2nd
FS in the 3rd
DE/DT in the 3rd (acquired pick)

Starting to get some talent there now.

3-tech was a higher priority, with that taken care of... Before you start your BPA rant, this was an "if Donald and Nix are there you have to go with Donald" scenario, at least for me.

I agree, if Nix and Donald are there, you go Donald. Cause he's the better player.

But how about Nix and Jernigan? And assume we didn't sign Melton.

The great thing about being this bad is that our options in the draft are wide open

I think Nix and Jernigan are both 1 techniques in our defense. I think Nix is the better 1 technique so I would take him.
