Jimmy in the first year won the coin flip to start the game. He deferred to the 2nd half, where the Cowboys had to kick off again.....
How does that make sense? If you defer your choice to the 2nd half.... why wouldn't he just choose to receive in the 2nd half?

I'm guessing he chose to kick in the first half. Or he chose the endzone to go towards.

That wasn't sudden death overtime though.
I don't see that much difference. At least Rod got his team a chance to get the receive the ball at least once in the game. I'm not saying Marinelli is a better coach than Johnson, just that many GREAT coaches have made mistakes in their first chance at being a HC.

In the NFL, prior to the 2008 season, the winner of the coin flip got his choice in the first half. In the second half the loser of the coin flip chose.

In 2008, the NFL followed the college way of doing things. There was no strategy in the NFL. If you won, you better receive.

That's why they changed.

In overtime at that time you take the ball period. Field goal wins it. In your example there is still a game to go through.

A game where you gave away a possession......

I'm still not following.

I thought if you win the coin toss, you have the option to choose, or to defer your choice until the 2nd half.

If you choose.... you better choose receive (because if you choose kick, the opponent will choose receive to start the 2nd half). So if you want the ball in the 2nd half, you "defer" and then choose to receive to start the 2nd half.

How has that changed?

That doesn't matter compared to giving a game away. That's the bottom line.

He's saying that before 2008, if you deferred in college you got your choice in the second half, if you deferred in the NFL you simply lost your choice and the other team would get to receive both times (first I had heard of that) and that allegedly, Jimmy didn't know the rule was different from the college rule during his first year as a head coach.

I remember it happening but its still not as bad as Marinellis overtime goof.

Yeah.... How can that be true? How could any team choose to receive in the second half then? You can't "choose" to receive in the second half at the beginning of the game, you either choose to receive to start, or you choose to defer your choice. If you "defer" your choice, how are you losing it in the 2nd half? Makes no sense.

Prior to 2008 the coin flip determined who had the choice in the first half and who had it in the 2nd. The winner of the coin flip, by deferring in the first half (letting the other team chose), they are essentially give up the right they just won.

The loser of the coin flip still got to chose in the 2nd half.

That's why teams ALWAYS took the ball when they won the coin flip.

That literally makes no sense. The term "defer" doesn't mean "give up totally." It means "reserve for later." If you deferred, you'd get to pick your choice later, ie, after the half, not give up totally.

I'm sorry to do this to you, but without an article, I'm gonna have to give you an "I don't believe this to be true."

By deferring you defer your choice to the second half, which meant you basically gave them the ball in the first half knowing you would get it in the second.

This is correct.
