Do Cowboys have map to Spencer deal?

March, 19, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- With the Dallas Cowboys agreeing to terms with defensive tackle Henry Melton on a one-year deal with a three-year option, have they found a structure for a deal for defensive end Anthony Spencer?

According to a source, Melton can make up to $5 million this year. He is guaranteed $9 million if he is on the roster on the first day of the 2015 league year, which kicks in the final three years of the deal.

Spencer, who played in only one game last year and is coming back from microfracture surgery, has visited with the Washington Redskins and New York Giants.

Both players are represented by Jordan Woy.

A difference in age could play a difference in price and structure. Although he is coming off a torn anterior cruciate ligament, Melton is 27. Spencer is coming off a complicated surgery and turned 30 in January.

The Cowboys know Spencer’s medical situation best since he has been rehabbing with the club after undergoing the surgery last fall. They have had success with guys in the past coming back from it as well in Al Johnson and Kevin Hardy.

Spencer made more than $19 million in 2012 and ’13 after the team used the franchise tag on him in both years.

As I said before, I'd be ok with bringing him back.

The longer he waits, and it appears that he will be waiting for a while, the cheaper he gets.

1 year deal, 3 million at most.

Screw 3 million, he might not even be ready for camp, he can come back on a 1 year deal for 1-2 million at most.

With the amount that he flat out stole last season by being franchised, he shouldn't get more than $1M.

Wow. $19 million for the last two years.

Six games? Maybe 8?

Ratliff was a thief, but Spencer didn't ask to be franchised....I blame that on our dumbass front office.

I think he will be an IR guy from start to finish if he stays in Dallas. The only way I would touch him is on a performance percentage contract with zero guarantees.

No way in hell I would pay him 3 mil for this upcoming season. I'd bet heavy money Mincey sees more playing time this upcoming season.

That's precisely why I would have a performance clause with incremental degrees based on percentage of plays.

You'd still be guaranteeing him 800,000. That's the minimum base salary (rounded down) for a guy with 7 years in. Too much.

Mincey is a proven LDE and Selvie and Crawford good in a rotation behind him. Spencer can be in the mix as a rotational RDE at a very low salary, like 1 million.

Dallas has a desperate need at RDE.

They won't get him back for minimum but any deal above the minimum would have to be earned via a performance schedule for me to be interested in keeping him on the roster. Probably the best move would be to close the door on him.
