Will Tony Romo suffer same fate as Ware?

March, 14, 2014

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

One of the biggest reasons the Dallas Cowboys moved on from defensive end DeMarcus Ware was money. The team just didn’t want to devote $16 million of salary-cap space to a player coming off a six-sack season whose body was beginning to break down.

If anything, you could say this was a smart move in getting rid of a player to save money, in this case, $7.4 million.

Quarterback Tony Romo will reach that point someday.

As part of a restructure, Romo converted $12.5 million of his 2014 base salary into a signing bonus. So now he’ll receive a base salary of $1 million, and his cap number is lowered from $21.7 million to $11.7.

If not for the restructure, Romo would have had the second-highest cap number in the NFL at his position behind Chicago’s Jay Cutler ($22.5 million).

Now Romo has the 16th highest cap hit at his position for this year.

But the future is almost now in the NFL, and the more the Cowboys keep pushing money around to create salary-cap space for the present, the more it will hurt them in the future.

Next year, Romo’s cap number is projected to be $27.7 million, the highest in the NFL. New Orleans' Drew Brees is projected to have the second-highest cap number for a quarterback at $26.4 million.

Romo’s base salary for 2015 is $17 million.

Team executive vice president Stephen Jones said a quarterback is going to take the biggest chunk of the cap on most NFL teams, and he’s right. Another example: the Giants'Eli Manning has a cap number of $20.4 million for 2014.

But at what point are you getting bang for your buck?

Romo turns 34 next month and is coming off his second type of back surgery, and if you see the same overall team result -- not making the postseason again -- regardless of how he plays, is it worth devoting a huge amount of cap space to him?

Yes, especially if you think he’s a good quarterback, which Romo is. Age and health are determining factors for players in the NFL. The fate of Romo, meanwhile might be decided in 2016.

Yeah, it’s a few years away, but if the Cowboys restructure Romo’s contract again next year to lower his cap number, it only increases it the following year. In 2016, Romo’s cap hit will be $17.6 million, pretty reasonable right?

Well before the restructure of 2014, the cap number for 2016 was $15.1 million. Now it has been increased. The Cowboys, like most NFL teams, expect the salary cap to grow each year, so they can absorb some of this money.

However, Romo, who is signed through 2019, will be 36 in 2016. Will he be the same at that age?

What happened to Ware this week could happen to Romo, and though it’s not easy to find a replacement for a defensive lineman, it’s harder to find a franchise quarterback.

If Romo tanks physically next year and the team doesn't do well it would be time to move on.

It would be really nice if we could draft our next QB this year and let him sit behind Romo for 1-2 seasons.

You know that's not going to happen. Jerry has hitched his proverbial wagon to Romo win or lose.

It looks like our front office has lowered their expectations for this season and have resigned to a significant rebuild. I bet we're willing to draft a quarterback in the top 100 this year if Jerry likes the kid enough.

Of course he will. Does anyone think he'll still be the starting QB in 2019 at age 39?

Hopefully we can cut him next year. His bonus acceleration will be a beast, but we'll be starting a rookie QB by then so being spendy in FA won't be a priority anyway.

There's no real need to cut Romo in the next couple of years as long as he can play at a high level. The most pressing need is to get young and strong on both fronts where we are still sorely lacking. Dallas hasn't had a physical presence on defense outside of a single year with Anthony Spencer since Roy Williams between 2003-2005.

It boggles the mind how people whose only job it is to build a pro football team can be so inept and paralyzed.

I think his back will make him incapable of playing 16 games fairly soon. Also, his arm strength clearly isn't what it used to be, probably due to the same issue, and I don't see that getting any better.

Something was clearly wrong with him after the Denver game last year. I think he threw his arm out a bit that game with his altered throwing mechanics and negatively impacted offseason conditioning. Bottom line the team needs to run the ball more and let Romo pick his moments.

It still stuns me that Romo threw the ball 17 times in a row to end that game. The Broncos ran at least once in almost every set of downs.

You have to give your team a chance to win. 17 straight passes is more proof of just how incompetent this team's coaching really is.

Since the coaches will be the same idiots plus one additional idiot, it pretty much screws Romo's chances at having a good year. We're not going to run the ball, we're going to throw 40+ times a game and Romo's going to be expected to take the pounding. I don't think he can.

There's little way we can get that to happen. We'll be ~$30M under the cap next year before extending Dez and Tyron Smith. Those two deals alone will likely eat $22-25M, and the remaining deals for the current players and salaries for the incoming rookie class will likely eat up the rest. So unless we cut more players and restructure a shitload more, we're not dumping him after the 2014 season. We're stuck with that albatross deal for at least 2 more years.

I wish we hadn't given him that fucking horrible deal in the first place. We should've let his worthless choke artist ass walk.
I agree with wishing we hadn't given him the extension, but I never get this sentiment. I don't bear Romo any ill will. There's nothing magically wrong with the guy, he's just a guy who can't carry an offense like a true top all pro QB. The organization mistook him for a Brady, Manning, Brees, Rodgers, and he isn't, never was, and nobody should fault him for Jerry's stupidity.

I don't think there was anything magically wrong with him. IMO, he could have won on a team that was dedicated to running the football and playing good defense, who would let him make a few big plays a game, like Roethlisberger before the Steelers roster fell apart.

I'm cool with that. We could also make the Dez and Tyron deals cap friendly in the first year to give us more room.

We have to look at a QB this year though. Ridiculous that we haven't so far, but it is what it is. Murray and Mettenberger...someone...anyone.

Mettenberger is like a clone of Ryan Mallett. Big, powerful arm, immobile, serious character issues since he is a convicted sex offender, not a full blown rapist like Roethlisberger, just got drunk and groped a woman at a bar, but you have to worry about him doing something worse down the road. You could draft him and keep him as a backup for a couple of years like NE has done with Mallett and keep close tabs on him.
