IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys will not be signing linebacker Will Herring, according to sources.

Herring had agreed to a one-year deal Thursday but both sides agreed to walk away, which keeps Herring as a free agent. Because Herring never signed the deal, the team never made an announcement. A source said it was not related to a failed physical.

Herring was viewed as a special teams player and backup linebacker for the Cowboys. He spent the last three seasons with the New Orleans Saints, playing mostly special teams and backup linebacker, and was the special teams captain in 2013.

In his three years with the Saints he started three games and had 35 tackles, two interceptions and forced one fumble. He joined the Saints after a four-year run with the Seattle Seahawks. He had three tackles on defense and two on special teams in New Orleans' win against the Cowboys last season.

Never understood this signing anyway.

Agent of New Orleans Saints OLB Will Herring says he’s ‘very angry’ with Dallas Cowboys for backing out of a one-year deal

The agent of New Orleans Saints free agent outside linebacker Will Herring said Friday that he’s “very angry” with the Dallas Cowboys for backing out of a one-year deal with his client.

George Mavrikes said the Cowboys “reneged” on the deal, citing their belief that Herring “may be an injury risk.” A Cowboys source and Mavrikes both said that Herring didn’t fail a physical, however.

The two sides agreed on a one-year deal for Herring on Thursday. Less than 24 hours later, the deal was called off.

“He is healthier than 90 percent of the league,” Mavrikes said of Herring. “He hasn’t missed a game or a practice the last two years and maybe missed five or so games in seven years, four because of a hamstring injury in his rookie year.

“It’s crazy and makes no sense. He’s the exact player Dallas needs.”

The signing of Herring would have boosted the Cowboys’ special teams. Herring was the Saints’ special teams captain last season and he would have also given the team more depth at linebacker.

However, Herring is back on the market as an unrestricted free agent and again looking for a new team.

Herring was excited about joining the Cowboys, tweeting Thursday, “Blessed to be playing in the Big D this year and to be a part of Cowboys organization!”

On Friday, Herring tweeted, “The bad news is I’m not signing withDallas. The good news is Jesus still sits on the throne! I hate it didn’t work out. Wish them the best.”

Pretty embarrassing that we pulled a shitty move like Oakland did with Rodger Saffold to a low level schlub.

WGAS?

It was a scrub player that we barely wanted in the first place. Why bother if he isn't healthy?

Well, the whole deal is that apparently he is. But we are reneging on a deal with a schlub. Sorry, that's not going to look good to other prospective free agent schlubs.

The only reason to do it if he is healthy is because they have alternative plans for those funds. Unfortunately, they haven't used them.

Sounds like his agent is being the little bitch. The player doesn't sound bitter at all in this statement:

And still, same damage.

Luckily this appears to be a small fry fringe agent. Do this to a powerful one, you have issues in negotiations.

Who is he is he competing with exactly?
If they draft a MLB and move Lee to WLB, there is plenty of competition...

May or may not happen, but Bruce has to know that his position isn't set.....

Jerry Jones signed Sean lee to a contract and he will play the position the contract says he will.

Whether he is actually able to play the position is beside the point. Jerry has decided.

We don't even know if the guy is healthy now, or ever will be again. Neck injuries ended Michael Irvin's career and Billy Cannon Jr.'s before it could start.
