Garrett: Ware can still be elite pass-rusher

February, 20, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

INDIANAPOLIS -- Before heading to the NFL scouting combine, Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett met with DeMarcus Ware, who had surgery on his right elbow on Tuesday.

The discussion never ventured in Ware’s status with the team, considering his $16 million salary-cap figure in 2014, but more on what Ware needs to do to regain his Pro Bowl form.

Ware had a career-low six sacks in 2013 and missed three games with a quadriceps injury while dealing with a few injuries, like a stinger and the elbow issue. Garrett reiterated he wants Ware to practice more. Of the 96 practices the past two seasons in which a daily injury report was filed with the league, Ware was limited or out 43 times because of injuries.

Despite the injuries and the lack of production in 2013, Garrett believes Ware can be an elite pass-rusher.

“He was dealing with a number of different things throughout the course of the season,” Garrett said. “So he’s been a great football player for us. We still feel like he’s a young player. We’ve got to get him healthy and get him back to the form we’re all used to.”

But Garrett stopped short of guaranteeing Ware would remain with the Cowboys. Executive vice president Stephen Jones acknowledged on Wednesday Ware cannot carry that $16 million price against the cap. The Cowboys could restructure, ask Ware to take a pay cut or simply release him before March 11.

“We don’t want to get into all of these roster discussions right now,” Garrett said. “But I had a great meeting with him [Wednesday]. What we anticipate all of the guys on our football team to do is get ready to play in 2014. In DeMarcus’ case, he’s got to get himself healthy, get that elbow cleaned up, the other things he’s had to deal with and get himself ready to go and be his best version.”

I think the best version has left the building, folks. It's called age, happens to everyone.

It's not as much ability as it is injuries. Regardless the man is on the decline and grasping at the idea that he will put together a healthy season to show that dominance is just ignorant. I've been in the corner of cut Ware for awhile. This is the tough decision that our team always gets wrong and it's why we don't have any freedom to sign guys in free agency to replace players like Ware.

I will say this though, if Ware wants to take a Doug Free special in terms of pay cut I may listen. That's because Ware on a cheap contract is worth the risk of seeing if he can have a late bounce back year.

He's already said publicly that he has no intention of taking a pay cut, so good luck with that.

There's no amount of shit that these assholes can't turn into shinola. Next week, we'll be hearing that Claiborne "can still be an elite cover corner."

In Tony Romo's eighth full season as a starter, the thought around Valley Ranch is that he can turn into an elite QB.

Ratliff hadn't done shit since 2009, and yet these assholes were still viewing him as a key contributor coming into this season.

Year to year the miscalculations we make in self evaluation if the returning players is what kills us more than even bad drafting.

Agreed.....and that's because it not only leaves with a hole on the field, but the financial commitment to that player hurts as well.

I like to call it unbridled, idiotic optimism.

Basically Jerry and his retarded hick kinfolk always think they're about to hit the next gusher.

This is exactly right. You really only have to hit on a couple of players in every draft to run a successful franchise, as long as you are able to retain the players that actually matter and cut loose the ones that don't.

Listen, assholes, it's better to stay with what you know than to go with what you don't... and stuff.
