Aikman on Jerry Jones' ownership: 'Unusual' that the Cowboys don't have a philosophy

A total of 1,681 miles separates Dallas from Seattle as the Boeing 737 flies.

The distance between the Cowboys and Seahawks may be even farther.

Seattle lost three games this season by a total of 15 points on its way to the Super Bowl title. The Cowboys lost four of their final seven games by a total of 52 points in missing the playoffs for a fourth consecutive season.

Seattle is building momentum and could be on the verge of sustained success. The Cowboys are treading water, doing their best not to go under.

"I think with winning organizations there are processes that are in place and there is a way to do things, a philosophy, a belief that you have and everything is built around that,'' Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman said. "If you take Seattle for instance, if you say 'hey, what is their philosophy,' you kind of know what that is. They're going to play great defense, they're going to run the football and they draft players who fit the mold of what they're looking for. I don't know that the Cowboys…

"The Cowboys tend to change their beliefs each year on what it is they need or what they're about. I find that to be somewhat unusual for a club that has been owned by the same owner for however long it's been.''

Point of clarification: however long has been 25 years, at least it will be later this month on the anniversary of Jerry Jones' purchase of the franchise.

We've all been saying this for years. The Cowboys haven't had an identity since 1996 or so.

I'd say the philosophy is to make as much money for Jerry Jones as possible

"Be America's Team."

It's ruined every season except for a few very short years with the team Jimmy Johnson inspired and built.

Troy angling for a front office gig?

Perhaps.
What can Aikman offer anyone? He was a player and now has been away from the game for years. He would be questionable even as a position coach in the NFL. To me the best he could do would be an assistant at a small college or head coach at a high school.

What can Elway offer anyone?

I'd take Aikman over Jerry just because I'd literally take anybody over Jerry.

Aikman would be an immediate upgrade if only because he wouldn't have Jerry's ego. And he'd have the possibility of being fired if the job wasn't done to satisfaction. That alone would make somebody more careful in their thought process and to be willing to listen to other input. Jerry doesn't have that, so he can wade in swinging wildly with no thought to the consequences of his actions.

Elway came with a strong football background from his father. Aikman knows about the same thing as Garrett learned from Johnson and would likely use the same approach. Garrett should know more because of his families' s background but it doesn't seem to show.

This is basically my thought process.

He already said he has thought about a front office job but didn't think the situation in Dallas would work because of Jerry. He said it more discreetly than that butnrhat was hinted at.

Leadership and expectations. Its not like he has been completely out of the loop when it come to football, he still watches film and studies players, moreso than the GM we currently have. I don't know that he would be good as a GM or Football Operations Manager but I wouldn't be agaist it.

He'sbeen saying things like this for a while though. I remember he was on local radio in Philly - 2012 I think - and was critical of the way the front office does things. I think he said something along the lines of, "it's not the way I would do things."

I think he's just honest. I also don't think he respects Jerry a whole lot.

I think Aikman is smart, knows the game, and would do a very good job if he wanted to do it.

I read an article from a day or two ago where Staubach was endorsing Aikman in that sort of role and Aikman basically said the time isn't right (young daughters, something, something) but he'd definitely look at it sometime in the future.

This is just a personal opinion but I think it's possible that he sees the end of the road coming for Jerry in the not so distant future and he may be trying to indirectly get into Stephen's ear for when that time comes.

I'm not against it, I just wouldn't have high expectations like Elway has had.

Didn't Elway run an arena league team for awhile as well?
