Can you tell me about DTV stream? I noticed that my mom is paying way too much for two TVs on the old DTV. I thought about switching her to their streaming, for some reason thought they had discontinued DTV stream. Does it look and act kind of like the satellite version? Not sure she'd like anything too radically different.
Moved the convo to the Tech Thread to avoid Booze's wrath.
It's got more of a YTTV feel but the added bonus is their channels are numbered like traditional DirecTV. For example 206 is ESPN, 212 is NFLN, and so on.
It could be due to me being new to the setup and using the app through a Roku device instead of DirecTV's provided streaming device, but getting around the interface is still a bit awkward for me. But like I said, I only just signed up for the service around 8 PM last night so I anticipate over time it'll become more natural for me.
If you're considering this for your parents I'd say this would probably be cheaper because there isn't a limit on the number of people who can stream when you're streaming at home. This is another improvement over YTTV which has a 3 device limit. So they can watch in all their bedrooms or any other room in the house without any extra charges.
The drawback particularly for older adults is if you want a remote with a number pad that allows you to just punch in the numbers to jump to your channel, you have to rent DTV's gemini device that's like $15 per month. Without that device and the DTV provided remote you have to scroll through the channel guide, channel-by-channel, to get to the program you're trying to watch. The guide scrolls pretty quickly so it's not too bad, but obviously not as good as just punching in the channels numbers.
I'm actually about to hop onto ebay and look for gemini device for myself. People are selling them on there for $125 and up. It's a steep initial investment but if you know you want remote with buttons it's a better deal in the long run than giving DirecTV $15/month to rent theirs for several years.
