Fixing personnel is key to Dallas' success

January, 29, 2014

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

While the Cowboys changed the duties of several of their coaches, the personnel problem continues at Valley Ranch.

Coach Jason Garrett needs help in terms of personnel.

Wide receiver Miles Austin’s inability to battle through hamstring issues last season limited what Bill Callahan could do with the offense. The team needs to figure out what caused DeMarcus Ware’s down year and if spending a first-round pick on a defensive lineman should be important this spring.

Upgrading other areas such as safety, linebacker, guard and maybe finding a quarterback should be priorities.

Owner Jerry Jones and Garrett can’t release everybody and start over. They can’t make everybody play better. One thing Jones did this year is make Will McClay the man in charge of the draft. McClay will put the draft board together. Now, if only Jones and Garrett will listen to him.

In last year's draft, Jones bypassed what his personnel people told him, took the advice of defensive line coach Rod Marinelli and chose not to take a defensive lineman in the first round.

It was a mistake.

Jones mentioned something about twitch muscles and whatnot on draft night as the reasoning. All we know is defensive tackle Jay Ratliff didn’t play a down for the Cowboys in 2013 and defensive end Anthony Spencer played in one game. Backup defensive end Tyrone Crawford was lost the second day of training camp with a torn Achilles tendon.

It’s easy to second guess the decision now, but the Cowboys have to form a better game plan when it comes to putting their personnel together.

And now that the 2014 coaching staff is in place, it’s time to fix the talent base.

And while the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos play in the cold of MetLife Stadium on Sunday, Cowboys officials should know this team is nowhere close to that elite level.

Correct. The musical chairs with coaches won't matter if we don't nail this draft.

We can't afford taking guys to fill holes with the mindset of being a player away. Outside of kicker, I can't think of a single spot on the team that we do not need depth.

Stop frickin' talking this way, Booze, or we will get another TE in the second.

I don't see how Donald gets to us...maybe, but he is the top DT IMO.

The one thing that might help is that he's not a 3-4 fit. A lot of 3-4 teams at the Senior Bowl were impressed with him but don't think they could justify spending a first round pick on him.

Fair point...I see this as a fairly week DT class though and that he might rise because of it.

Go heavy on the lines. An influx of talent is needed badly there.

And Jerry needs to stop his bullshit in the 2nd round.

The only team ahead of us that I think may jump at him is Chicago. But if they retain Melton I can see them pass.

Donald will not go in the top 10, he just doesn't appeal to teams that run any kind of 3-4 or variation of it that high in the draft. I'm sure a 3-4 team would take him towards the end of the 1st or in the 2nd but no team is spending a top 10 pick on a guy his size unless he is an absolute perfect fit.

There is also way too much talent at the positions traditionally drafted high, QB, LT, edge rusher, so I see no way he goes top 10. Like someone else said, perhaps Chicago takes him at 14 but they could just as well take a guy like Ealy or Nix. I think there is at least a 50% chance that Donald is there when we pick.

In the first? Any number of players. Any of the top 3 QBs that may slide (no thanks on Carr), Mack, Mosley, Clinton-Dix, Barr, and high rated OL.
Those guys most likely won't be there (though I pass on Clinton-Dix).

Most of them, but it looks like Barr is starting to slip and there will be OL there. The top G will be in that range. Probably the 2nd or 3rd rated OT will be there.

And I think you're nuts on Clinton-Dix. His range is amazing.
