I think he was talking about both the pick at 12 and his overall team building philosophy. He said at 12 they want a guy who can impact the game - sacks turnovers, TDs - which basically aligns with his general philosophy.
That was my understanding.
Yes but he also kind of talks out of both sides of his mouth. Because then he will talk about running the ball, stopping the run and being physical. Which sort of screams the other direction in terms of DT, LBer, interior O-line and RB.
If I were to interpret it, I think he believes the real elite players need to be at OT, DE, Corner and WR. Thus talking about the 12th pick specifically. And I say that because the clip started with him talking about the high pick and not wanting to pick that high again. He said the word 12 multiple times. Because that's where you usually get the really elite players. And corner is kind of debatable but I get the other positions. That's where you need the special talent. You need good players at other positions too. I mean you can't get by with turds on the interior of the O-line for example. But you can get by with less talent if they are well coached. When you have a WR or corner one on one, you just have to have talent. When you have a DE vs a OT one on one, you just need talent. Coaching helps but those are sort of the real star positions.
And obviously QB just doesn't get talked about because of Dak but that's sort of the one thing glossed over here. Because a perfectly thrown ball or a perfectly manipulated defense is unbeatable. But we aren't taking a QB at 12 so no reason to really discuss that.
