I want to believe that McCarthy isn't this dumb and instead is just echoing the company message.
I don't know what his angle is exactly, just keeping the peace in hopes that things go somewhat well this year. I think he actually likes coaching in Dallas so that's probably why he's playing nice.

Like I said the other day, I don't why he wouldn't stand his ground more in his final year under contract unless it's because he actually wants to stay in Dallas as you suggested.

Otherwise, I still don't get it.

You know at some point I think McCarthy needs to just act like his job and future is on the line. You're not going to have a job in Dallas right now the direction things are heading. And if things get much worse it may hurt your chances of having a job anywhere in the future as a head coach. Why continue to bow down to Jerry? This is a great opportunity for McCarthy to basically say fuck it, if I'm going down, I'm going down doing things the way I want to do them. To hell with Jerry or appeasing certain players.

But instead it just feels like that's not in McCarthy's DNA. He isn't going to rock the boat at all until the day his contract isn't renewed. And I get coaches need to pick their words but if I was McCarthy I'd look at my RB room and go, this group of guys is hampering my offense dramatically. I'm going to try Delvin Cook. I'm going to give you names of dudes on other teams practice squads that I want on the roster. Screw the making Zeke happy, forcing this Dowdle thing, or trying to help create this sweet story around Deuce. These guys just suck and I'm going to do everything I can to improve it while I'm here.
No matter how this season turns out, I think he's done enough to land another job elsewhere. There are recycled coaches in this league with far worse resumes than McCarthy.

Twelve wins every season he's had a healthy Dak. Plus I think most teams will give him the benefit of the doubt this season seeing as how it's very apparent to everyone that the Joneses neglected practically every position of need this offseason.

Took him awhile to get the Dallas job after winning a Superbowl and great success with the Packers. The NFL is weird. Most teams want the hot new coach. Hell Bill Belichick didn't get a job offer last offseason. One of the greatest coaches in NFL history and a very well respected dude. I'm not saying McCarthy would never coach again. But I don't think getting another head coaching gig is going to be that easy for him if this team falls apart.

It used to be I paid attention to this because some seemed to really hate the Cowboys and some didn't. Now it just feels like every game the Cowboys are the ones getting all the penalties so I stopped paying attention. The crew just doesn't seem to matter to me anymore.
You're right. The crews don't matter anymore. It's not the officials fault our undisciplined OL/DL false start and line up offsides 5 or 6 times a game.

100% true. At least control the fucking penalties that you can control. And those are easy. Didn't we have a 12 men on the field penalty too? Like FFS, get your shit together.

I think the Belichick thing was mostly due to his cranky personality and how awful the Patriots looked without Brady. I believe he'd have been employable with one of those dings against him, but not both.

If he'd have left NE the same year as Brady or even one year later, I think he'd have been hired immediately. Instead the league watched him put together 3 seasons of mostly terrible football without Brady. That's why he wasn't picked up, IMO.

And the trend seems to be that the first drive of the game has become a penalty shit show. Hard to get off to a quick start when you're trying to dig yourself out of a 1st and 20 hole on the opening drive.

Mike just sat out one year, didn't he?

Anyway, as far as his comment on the backs, I think he just meant we need to sustain drives, convert more third downs, and thus run more plays on offense. He knows as well as anyone our RB group (trying not to say "room") sucks.

Well penalties prevent you from running the ball, shitty running prevents you from running the ball (2nd and 9 isn't a run down and despite the bone head call 1st and 20 draws to Zeke are absolute shit), if you want to run the ball, be more effective at it.

The other problem is the defenses inability to get off the field limits your plays on offense too. Look at the Giants game, they drove the field on almost every possession. The only reason we won is because we held them to field goals every time. He may want to have a talk with Zimmer if he wants to run the ball more. Because you don't exactly get many chances when your defense is giving up 10 yard cushions making for easy first downs.

And I'm kind of convinced that Mike is thinking like you say. Which is why we are running so many curls and comebacks back routes. It's like we don't want to score as much as we just want to move the ball and keep the ball. Which of course dies at the first penalty of the drive.

I think they'd give him the benefit of the doubt for working for the Jones', period.

Hence the reason why I think he should put his foot down this year. Maybe I'm being naive, but I think the other owners around the league wouldn't frown upon him being defiant with Jerry because they know how this environment is different and it's not all about football.

What he's done here is mightily impressive and I think that's what they would focus on the most.

This is the circus like shit that goes on in Dallas that will never allow a coach to turn this place around. And I'm not trying to make a big deal of this one incident. You know that's just a drop in the bucket of the many circus like things that surround these players in Dallas.
I wonder if Jones pays his coaches on the cheap too.

Jerry is cheap when it comes to anything Cowboys related. It's actually become really sad. He only cares to spend enough money to keep the money training rolling. His priorities are really about enjoying life in other ways.

It took a year, I don't think that's a while. And several teams were interested when we hired him. Teams jumped all over Reid when he was on the market also. Belichick is different because of his age.

I agree the NFL is weird about this stuff sometimes but I don't think McCarthy would much problem getting another job if he wanted. Jacksonville for example would be a great fit for him.

I think you severely overestimate the other owners in the league.

Yeah, a good portion are probably just greedy cunts that don't care about winning as long as the money keeps coming in.

Sports are eat up with shitbags like that.

Baseball is a good example. Reds and Pirates owned by fucking misers who don't want to spend a dime, while even smaller markets like Brewers spend what they can and make playoffs.
