So I bought my daughter and I each a Thompson Center Compass rifle for Christmas. I bought her a 6.5 CM and a .308 for me. Inexpensive little rifles with great value and some amazing accuracy. I put a 20 year old Simmons scope on hers and shot 5 shot groups I could cover with a quarter. I haven't tuned in the .308 yet, but I'm excited for it. Both came with cheap polymer stocks, but I'm going to order laminate stocks from Boyd's which should make them even more accurate.

Regardless, I also bought a Remington 700 AAC-Sd tactical in 6.5 CM for myself. That one I want to turn into a distance shooter and medium range hunter. It's already getting a Triggertech trigger and a KRG stock, but I'm pondering scope choices. Trying to stick around $1500 or so. Scopes I've researched are Steiner T5X, Leupold Mark 5 5-25, Vortex Razor 2 HD 5-25, Bushnell XTR 2 and DMR Pro 2, and a few others. Some of these companies offer LE discounts which put them in my price range. Nightforce isn't in this range to consider. Anyone had any interaction with any of these scopes and can offer an opinion? Mitli?
10-4. Try the Steiner. I have 2 of them, both 3-15x50. I've had the Razor and its also very good...but its Japanese glass vs German glass, and IMO I just think the German glass is a bit better in that price range.

I think for the money, you can't beat the glass and I also really like the turrets and the Zero stop on the Steiner.. Its almost as good as my scopes that ran me 3500-4000 dollars, and when you get right down to it glass is such a subjective argument . Unless you are hunting at the very fringes of darkness (or morning) or shooting out to 400-500 yards then the idea of a 3K or 4K scope starts to become a bit overkill. I also have a couple of the XTR IIs that are really good for the money.

Sweet. Thanks for the info. I had been looking at the Steiner 4-16, but with this 6.5 CM I'd really like to be able to shoot out to maybe 1000 yards. Could probably do it with a 4-16, but 5-25 would be sooo much better. The wife just planned a spring break trip for the family that is going to take my scope money for about 3 months, but I can still be researching to pounce when I have the funds.

I can easily get to 1000 yards with the 3-15 on my 6.5 rig right now.

The 6.5 really isn't a game round past about 600 yards if you go with the 1000 ft/lbs of energy rule, but I know guys who have taken kills out to 700 yards with handloads.

I keep that in mind. This rifle is primarily for paper, steel, deer and pigs. Nothing more than 400 yards for live targets. When I finish this one, I have my 7 Rem Mag that I'll start modifying. that's my primary elk and big deer gun. And until I get some long distance under my belt with the other, I don't shoot past 400 yards at a live target anyway. Or I haven't had to yet.

Can't believe it took me this long to find this thread. Great info along the way. If you ever find a Sig 226 for under $500 again please link it to me.

I carry a Sig P239. I own/have owned Glock, Springfield, Hi-Point(never again), Taurus, Browning and of course Sig Sauer. Still haven't bought my first AR but I do have an SKS that should be arriving any day now.

Speaking if Sigs. I am in a raffle for the gun below. I have already decided if I don't win it in the raffle, I'm buying it. I love the way this gun looks, plus it's a Sig, so you know it's good quality. It's a Sig Sauer P983 9mm Texas Edition.

FYI, I never did sell that AR15. My wife keeps reminding me that I was supposed to, but I keep "forgetting". :lol

Not a gun, but readers here probably would be hand-in-hand with knife knowledge. any suggestions for a small everyday carry serrated folding knife? Approx 2-3” length blade. No specific purpose, just to have handy on person

- Cold Steel, Ruike, Benchmade, etc....

Kershaw makes great knives. And they are reasonably priced.

If you want something to carry that has a killer edge, but won’t care if you nick the blade or lose it....try Boker. I have 2 or 3 of their auto knives just for every day use. I save my Benchmades or Microtechs for when I won’t F up the blade.

I picked up one of their autos at a gun show awhile back I really like, the one that comes in case that looks like an AK mag
