To have a chance against Eagles, Cowboys simply need more from Jason Garrett than philosophy
By David Moore , Staff Writer

FRISCO -- Jason Garrett does an outstanding job of keeping his team on point.

While the eyes off outsiders glaze over when the Cowboys coach launches into his latest soliloquy about how all the players need to do is focus on that day's practice, it's clear the players have bought into the approach. He deserves credit for helping the Cowboys navigate last season's brewing quarterback controversy and this season's Ezekiel Elliott saga.

But the team needs more than "next man up'' platitudes as it prepares for its showdown with Philadelphia. No one expects Garrett to abandon one of the major planks of his philosophy. But when the "next man up'' is asked to replace left tackle Tyron Smith or linebacker Sean Lee, as they were in Sunday's loss to Atlanta, the drop-off is too severe to conduct business as usual.

Garrett constantly tells his players to "control what you can control.'' What Garrett and his staff must control is putting his players in positions to succeed.

That didn't happen against the Falcons.

The failure to respond to Lee's unexpected departure eight defensive snaps into the game is troublesome, but not particularly surprising. The coaching staff's options were limited at that point.
But the Cowboys prepared to play Sunday's game without Smith. They knew Chaz Green would need formation and personnel help in a way their Pro Bowl left tackle doesn't.

As Green began to unravel before their eyes, the coaches did little to fortify or alter that plan to slow his descent. Their refusal to pull Green from the game until the fourth quarter smacks of stubbornness more than it does showing faith in Green.

"Well, fortunately, when Tyron is playing left tackle for you, we rarely have to game plan any of that kind of stuff,'' Garrett said. "You never really talk about what kind of formation you're going to be in or who's chipping.

"Tyron has just been a dominant player for us at that spot. So part of the game plan this week was to help our tackles in this game, particularly left tackle, getting his first start over there, whether it was with the formation use or with the back.

"Again, we didn't do it 100 percent of the time. The times we didn't do it, it hurt us."

Garrett's resolve is one of his greatest strengths as a coach, but it can also be one of his greatest weaknesses. He places so much trust in the unemotional analysis and preparation that goes into a game he's loath to budge once the game is underway if it's not working.

There's a chance Smith returns for Sunday night's game against the Eagles. It's slim. At this stage, the Cowboys must prepare that they will again be without him.

Green can't start. He was so bad against the Falcons that Garrett must remove him from the situation in order to build his confidence back up. That means going into the game with veteran Byron Bell and a plan that gives him more consistent help than the coaching staff was willing to give Green.

Sources say it's likely that Lee will miss the next three games. They must adapt there as well.

"Obviously, when your front-line players go out, you have to be able to continue to play and be effective,'' Garrett said. "We simply have to play better when he's not in there.

"It's not only against the run, but it's against the pass. We'll continue to look at that, the personnel that we have in there, what we're asking them to do and just seeing if they're capable of doing it on a consistent basis.

"Again, we're evaluating that. We have to make sure we get better in that area.''

What the defense has done during Lee's absence this season hasn't been working. Look for veteran Justin Durant to be active and get significant playing time against the Eagles. Look for Jaylon Smith to have a reduced role.

"You've got to fight, man,'' tight end Jason Witten said of what this team must do. "You've got to fight your tail off to find a way to compete.''

Fight isn't the problem for the Cowboys under Garrett.

Adapting on the fly has been.

"Next man up'' remains valid. But the players need more from their head coach this week.

Blood from a stone.

You can't get something from Garrett that he does not possess.

With Jaylon Smith starting, you can pretty much guarantee that they'll be able to run on us.

And if they can run, it'll set other things up and this offense without Zeke and Tyron won't be able to catch up.

My guess is they win by double digits.

I really like David Moore, but even he -- who is usually pretty objective -- has been brainwashed by Garrett. Spouting junior high cliches about fighting and focusing on today over and over is not coaching and it's not "philosophy".

Anyway, the Philly game may not be a win, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if the team plays better than we expect. I like the intangibles of coming off a bad loss with everyone doubting you, from both the Cowboys' side and the Eagles'. Maybe Philly really is a juggernaut, but it's hard for any team to play that well all year with no slip ups.

I don't think the Eagles are anywhere near to being a juggernaut.

Do I think they are legitimately good team? Yes.

But a force? Not really.

They actually don't scare me and would've loved our chances had we come in with a healthy squad. But being without Zeke is bad enough, but with not Tyron and no Lee, I can't see how we're going to win this game when we have to depend so much on this mediocre staff having to coach us to victory.

It just ain't gonna happen.

Cowboys to see low-key Bill Vinovich at ref vs. Eagles

ESPN Staff Writer

FRISCO, Texas -- Whether true or not, when Ed Hochuli works a game, his crew seems flag-happy.

In their 27-7 loss to the Atlanta Falcons Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys were called for five penalties for 54 yards. The Falcons had five penalties for 35 yards.

Bill Vinovich, who will work Sunday’s game between the Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles, called five total penalties for 55 yards in the Minnesota Vikings’ win against the Washington Redskins. The Vikings were penalized three times for 40 yards. The Redskins had two penalties for 15 yards.

In the second half, Vinovich’s crew called just one penalty and it came in the third quarter. How refreshing.

Since 2012, Vinovich has worked six Cowboys games and Dallas has a 4-2 record in those contests, including a Week 2 win last year at Washington. In the six games, the Cowboys have been flagged 30 times for 282 yards, while their opponents have been flagged 41 times for 318 yards.

Here is a breakdown of the work of Vinovich’s crew last week:

False start – 1

Roughing the passer – 1

Unsportsmanlike conduct – 1

Offensive holding – 2

Quarter-by-quarter:

First – 2

Second – 2

Third – 1

Fourth – 0
