This seemed like a good idea at the time.

I think the term "system" is over used these days. Most teams are working with the same basic plays. It's the motions and other stuff that differentiates one from another.
Looking at the gameday breakdowns from Sturm, it appears Garretts offense looks like something out of the 80's vs what you see from the McVays and McDaniels out there.

It's all about formations and the matchups you get. I'm hoping whoever our new offensive coordinator is at least gets the freedom to do that. Our offense right now runs a lot of stagnate shit. They line up and they run the play. The most motion you see if a RB coming out of the backfield or a TE/WR lining up wide and then motioning inside to block. Which is why is looks like an offense straight out of the 80's. We have pick plays and other stuff. We just run those plays so sparingly that it seems like they aren't in our playbook. We put so few guys in motion that it looks like an 80's offense. But essentially these aren't revolutionary route concepts that McVay is running. It's how he calls the plays and the way he moves guys around and the formations that he uses to create mismatches while running the route concepts.

It's sort of like what you see in the interview between Gruden and Kellen Moore. The play they are running isn't really anything revolutionary or out of the box. But the window dressing is designed to confuse the crap out of the defense. Which leads to a successful play and in the NFL can lead to breakdowns in coverage.

You have to know he isnt going to go out after a loss like that dont you? Brees is already talking about coming back and dont think he would even contemplate if he knew Payton was even thinking about doing that.

Probably because he wasn't the one calling the plays.
It is not about play calling.

It is about play design.

The things the offense does pre-snap and what the players are supposed to do after it.

You can call the best plays from a fucked up playsheet and it won't matter.

Fine point. We'll also need the new OC's play designs to mesh with our HC's offensive philosophy...so maybe Garrett could read some books, attend a few coaching seminars, then develop an offense and get this team pointed in the right direction. That'd be great.

It's as if you are not a fan of our 3rd and long route combination of run to the sticks and turn around.

It's partially about play calling. When you are going for it on 4th and 1 and you've been stopped using the run pretty regularly, you do something like they did on the earlier 4th down. You don't call the play they did with Elliott the only back and everyone bunched in. That is stupid play calling.
