Report: Vikings have interest in George Selvie

Posted by Josh Alper on March 15, 2015, 3:48 PM EDT

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer called defensive end Michael Johnson after Johnson visited the Vikings on Saturday and tried to convince Johnson not to get on a plane to Cincinnati.

Johnson took the flight to Ohio, however, and he won’t be making a return flight. Johnson signed with the Bengals on Sunday, leaving the Vikings without the defensive line help they were hoping to add.

They may be moving on to George Selvie in their attempt to get it. Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press reports that the team has kept in touch with Selvie’s representatives since the “legal tampering” window opened on March 7 and that he may visit Minnesota this week.

Selvie started 13 games for the Cowboys last season and had 30 tackles and three sacks. That helped the Dallas defense outperform expectations although Selvie had a bit more individual success with seven sacks while making 16 starts in 2013. If he does land in Minnesota, he’ll join Everson Griffen and Brian Robison in the rotation for the Vikings.

How do we take this?

On one hand Selvie is just depth. On the other hand can we afford to lose him?

At this point, we have no choice but to throw numbers at the DL in the draft. Not a horrible thing.

Still will need to commit one pick to RB.

It is not that easy. The more we allow this talent issue on the DL to exist, the worse it is going to be when we enter the draft desperate.

What I really expected Dallas to do was get one DL and then free up options. We have not done that and it will be very challenging.

Jeremy Mincy, Ty Crawford, Terrell McClain, and Demarcus Lawrence are your day one starters. Interior depth is Nick Hayden and Josh Brent, with no other DE's under contract. Right now the closest prospects might be Anthony Spencer and maybe Selvie.

A Raji prove-it deal cements the interior, and a high draft pick at DE keeps us building for the future. Depending on Raji's health, that seems like a solid group.

B.J. Raji will not be a Cowboy.

Just get that crap out of your head. You will feel better when he signs somewhere else for what we probably signed these three FAs for combined.

I see, by "better" you mean "desirous of smashing your own head in with a ball peen hammer"
